Alumnus Appointed Chair of Rutgers-Camden Board of Trustees

Sandy Stewart, a Rutgers University-Camden graduate, (CCAS ’81, GSC ‘87) was appointed chair of the university’s Board of Trustees on July 1, 2014.

The Rutgers–Camden alumnus was first appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2006. As chair, Stewart will serve on several committees as an ex officio member, including the Board of Trustees Joint Investments Committee, the Governance Improvement Task Force, the Rutgers University–Camden Alumni Association Board, and the Advisory Board of the Camden Small Business Incubator.

“I received an incredible education at Rutgers–Camden and I consider it a major part of my success, so it’s always been important to me that I find ways to give back to the university,” Stewart says. “I’ve served on the Board of Trustees for eight years and am honored to have been named chair. It’s another way for me to give back to a place that gave so much to me.”

Stewart, a resident of New Hill, N.C., is the retired co-founder and CEO of Arcanum Discovery, Inc., a biotechnology company focused on drug target identification and validation. Prior to Arcanum, Stewart co-founded two other biotechnology companies, Immunovation and Paradigm Genetics (now Cogenics Icoria, Inc.).

A former Medford resident, Stewart says he first became re-engaged with Rutgers–Camden in 2002, when he joined the Rutgers University–Camden Alumni Association and the Dean’s Leadership Council.

“There’s a soft spot in my heart for Camden because, as someone who went to high school in Virginia, I chose to be there. Camden became home for me and still feels like home, so Rutgers–Camden means a lot to me and I’m proud to represent it on the Board of Trustees.”

The Board of Trustees is composed of 59 voting members comprised, as mandated by state law, by the following: 28 charter members (of whom at least three shall be women); 20 alumni members appointed by the Nominating Committee of the Board of Trustees; and six public members appointed by the New Jersey governor with confirmation by the New Jersey State Senate. Of the 28 charter seats, three are reserved for students with full voting rights.

Stewart is the second Rutgers–Camden graduate to serve as Board of Trustees chair.  Anthony DePetris (CCAS ’84) served as chair during 2008-09.
