Gabelli Students Win Trading Challenge

A team from the Gabelli School of Business – Fordham University won first place at the recent U.S. University Trading Challenge in Philadelphia.

The four team members are students in Gabelli’s Master of Science in Quantitative Finance program, according to a press release from the school.

The other universities participating in the competition included Temple (the host school), Polytechnic Institute of NYU, Christopher Newport University, University of New Haven, Hofstra and Washington University in St. Louis.

According to the Gabelli press release, students spent a month preparing for the daylong event — without faculty help and while carrying a challenging course load. The components of the competition were the Portfolio Management Challenge, Investment Banking Presentation Challenge, Treasury Challenge and Trading Challenge.

In addition to the team win, Gabelli student Zhifang Sun also won the Best Individual Trading award.

Douglas Blackburn is the academic director for the MSQF program.

“This team, through their hard work, diligence and pursuit of excellence, represents all that I have come to expect from Fordham’s quantitative master’s students,” he said.

Gabelli’s MSQF is a full-time program that can be completed within a year (although the school encourages students to take more time). It is recognized as a CFA Institute Partner, meaning that the program’s curriculum is well-suited to helping students prepare for the CFA exams. One of the program’s distinctive assets is its own 28-seat trading floor, complete with Bloomberg terminals and live data feeds.

Graduates of the MSQF program go on to jobs with employers such as investment banks, commercial banks, hedge funds and other financial firms, according to the school.
