“Signing Day” at Mays Business School Celebrates Job Offers for MBA Students

In early December 2015, the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University held its first official “Signing Day,” celebrating Mays MBA and master’s students who accepted job and internship offers.

The event was intended as a celebration similar to the one that occurs when athletes commit to new teams. Seventy signees took part in its first year, celebrating their new endeavors with refreshments and photo sessions.

Of last year’s master’s students, roughly 96 percent received job offers before graduation. Among the top companies hiring Mays graduates are HP, AT&T, Infosys, Dell and Amazon. Leading industries drawing recent graduates are technology, consulting and energy, and the most popular functions among Mays graduates are consulting, general management, sales/marketing, finance/accounting, human resources and logistics/operations.

The event originated with an idea from Mays Facilities and Resources Officer Ed Segura. Kim Austin, director of the Career Management Center at Mays, agreed with Segura’s belief that this celebration could give a “name and face” to the consistently successful statistics reported by Mays each year. “Using social media, we posted photos of individual students with the hiring company logos. Most of the employers favorited and then retweeted the posts within minutes,” Austin said. “…not only was ‘Signing Day’ a fun way to celebrate with the students, it garnered positive press for the Mays MBA brand with employers.”

In addition to the positive press the event provided for the Mays MBA program, students had the opportunity to use the event as a celebration for their hard work and success.
