UC San Diego Building Project

Father of Modern Portfolio Theory. Nobel Laureate. Philosopher. Born in Chicago in 1927 to grocers Morris and Mildred Markowitz, Dr. Harry M. Markowitz developed his lifelong interest in philosophy, particularly the work of David Hume, while still in high school. At the University of Chicago, Harry studied under economics giants Milton Friedman, Tjalling Koopmans, Jacob Marschak, and Leonard Savage, and was a member of the Cowles Commission for Research in Economics. His distinguished career spans seven decades, from the development of his seminal Modern Portfolio Theory to the creation of computer models for manufacturing and operations, and is punctuated with accolades from economics’ most prestigious prizes— the Nobel Prize, John von Neumann Operations Theory Prize, and Wharton-Jacobs Levy Prize for Quantitative Financial Innovation. Considered among the world’s most influential economists, Harry is also an active educator, researcher, and publisher. Harry and his wife Barbara are proud San Diegans, where he continues to teach his groundbreaking theory on portfolio selection to students at the Rady School of Management.

Join us for a lunch reception on Friday, October 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rady School of Management.
