D’Amore-McKim Career Center Director Provides Advice for Job Seekers

D’Amore-McKim Career Center Director Provides Advice for Job Seekers

Lynne Sarikas, the Director of the MBA Career Center at Northeastern University’s D’Amore-McKim School of Business, has published an article in Business Insider and Career Attraction. The article is called “13 Resolutions Every Job Seeker Should Make”, and it provides advice for people at different stages of a job search.

In the article, Sarikas identifies networking as “the single most important thing you can do in your job search.” Sarikas points to a study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics that found that approximately 80% of positions are filled through networking. She advises that job seekers talk to family and friends to find potential contacts. Job seekers can also reach out to individuals at their target companies for informational interviews to develop contacts. Sarikas suggests that job seekers aim to make at least five networking connections per week.

Throughout the article, Sarikas emphasizes preparation. At the beginning of a job search, people should define their career goals and develop a path to achieve them. Then, they should update their resume and practice writing customized cover letters. Sarikas also suggests that job seekers develop a target list of companies, and keep a watchful eye on the content of their social media accounts.

Lynne Sarikas was the Vice President of Development at the United Way of Massachusetts Bay before she began working for Northeastern University. While working for United Way, Sarikas managed a fund-raising team that built and developed United Way’s corporate relationships. Sarikas has also held management positions that provided her with substantial experience in customer service, sales, account management, and operations management.

Building Global Connections for Jobs Abroad: McDonough and ESADE’s Global Career Conference

Building Global Connections for Jobs Abroad: McDonough and ESADE’s Global Career Conference

On November 22, Georgetown McDonough School of Business and ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain, hosted their third annual Global Career Conference and Expo. This symposium is the only in-person career fair of its kind that directly connects employers to U.S. MBA candidates seeking global opportunities, as well as international students seeking employment stateside.

McDonough and ESADE joined forces to create this conference due to the growing number of international student requests for greater visibility in the job and internship search process. While some schools hold virtual events of this sort, these two schools felt as though it was imperative to create a live event that would encourage actual discourse and build real connections between students and employers. Many organizations that were present even conducted on-site interviews and information sessions.

Smeal MBA Students Attend Largest Career Fair in the US

Thirty four MBA students at Penn State University’s Smeal College of Business had the opportunity to attend the largest career fair in the country at the annual exposition and conference of the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) in Houston. The Smeal College of Business and Penn State University both contributed money to support student attendance at the event. More than one hundred businesses attended the fair to meet MBA students or conduct interviews. Some companies even hired students on-site. The Smeal MBA students had the opportunity to interview with Unilever, Hewlett-Packard, Target, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, Chrysler, Eli Lilly, Darden Restaurants, the William Wrigley Jr. Company, and General Electric.

The students had the opportunity to prepare for the conference by working with the directors of Penn State Smeal’s Career Services: Mike Brown and Emily Giacomini. The directors helped students prepare cover letters and resumes to hand out at the event, and gave students feedback in mock interviews. Brown and Giacomini try to prepare all students for events throughout the year. Assistant Dean for Diversity Enhancement Programs Jamie Campbell and Director of MBA Employer Relations Paul Poissant accompanied students to the conference to help students and interface with alumni and employers at the event as representatives of Smeal. Rutgers Group Provides Career Resources and Support To LGBT Community

Rutgers Group Provides Career Resources and Support To LGBT Community

A new group at Rutgers’ Business School Newark/New Brunswick, RBS Pride, aims to provide support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) MBA students. The club aims to extend Rutgers’ well-established support networks for LGBT students to the business school, which does not currently have a LGBT organization. Rutgers has a new LGBTQ Diversity Resource Center, but it focuses its support on undergraduate student concerns. MBAs have a separate set of issues, particularly in terms of workplace and career concerns. The club will give students a chance to talk freely about issues like workplace discrimination and benefits.

RBS Pride founder Jett McGurk hopes that the organization will also give students access to enhanced career resources. She would like LGBT students to have the opportunity to go to events like Reaching Out MBA (ROMBA), a conference that provides extensive networking opportunities for LGBT MBA students and recent alumni. The conference also gives students the chance to interact with recruiters from prominant businesses, and discuss workplace issues for LGBT MBAs. Students and organizations from business schools like Harvard Business School and New York University’s Stern School of Business are frequent attendees of the conference and similar events, and McGurk hopes to give Rutgers students the same opportunities to participate.

The group will have provisional status for two semesters, and will officially become a club after organizing events successfully, including an event at the Livingston Campus. While under provisional status, the club will have an opportunity to gain the necessary number of members and elect leaders. The organization is open to members of the LGBTQ community at Rutgers and their allies.

There are still great career opportunities in finance for mba grads

There are still great career opportunities in finance for mba grads

Although a recent article in Crain’s New York explained that MBA graduates seem to have fallen out of love with Wall Street, the feeling isn’t mutual. Leading New York City finance firms still want MBAs, and (being finance firms) they are willing to offer great compensation packages to sweeten the deal.

An August 22 report from Training the Street (TTS),  a corporate training provider, revealed that large Wall Street banks, investment consulting firms, and private equity firms in New York are actively recruiting MBAs to join their ranks. Continue reading…

Boston College Graduate Reveals Best MBA Careers for Work-Life Balance

Boston College Graduate Reveals Best MBA Careers for Work-Life Balance

Jill Huggett, a graduate of the Carroll School of Management at Boston College, rose through the ranks of Fidelity Investments, eventually becoming vice president; the time-intensive nature of the position, however, gave her pause.

“I got moved into a division that did not provide flexibility,” Huggett, mother of two, recently explained to U.S. News & World Report. Her hour-long commute and 45 to 50 hour workweek interfered with the time she spent parenting her children, motivating Huggett to launch her own business, Bridgepath Career Advisors, in 2011. She now has control over her schedule and makes a salary that’s comparable to what she made at Fidelity Investments.

A recent study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that people across a variety of fields worked an average of 7.7 hours per day in 2012. But according to the Graduate Management Admission Council, that average inches up to 9 hours a day for MBA graduates.

So what are the elements that determine the amount of time MBA graduates spend tethered to a desk?

“There are four main factors that are going to go into being able to get a job that pays well and yet gives you work-life balance,” says Huggett, who is a résumé consultant for the Harvard Business School alumni network in addition to her position at Bridgepath Career Advisors, “Those factors are based on the industry you’re going into, the level of the role you’re looking at, geographic location and then also what business school you came out of.”

For MBA graduates, the jobs that offer the best combination of flexible hours and a lucrative paycheck are sales, consulting and marketing. But don’t let these factors outweigh others such as benefits, office culture, and of course, interest.

“Pick something that you’re going to enjoy,” Huggett says, “Even if it pays well and has flexibility, if you don’t like it, you’re not going to last very long.”

Lehigh Scholarship Offers Launchpad for Global Career

Lehigh Scholarship Offers Launchpad for Global Career

Lehigh University’s College of Business and Economics recently shared a graduate profile  that highlights a unique scholarship opportunity that positions students for business careers on a global scale. The profile follows Alex Shnaydruk, who earned a full ride through Lehigh’s MBA program from the Global Village MBA scholarship.

Offered by Lehigh’s Iacocca Institute, the Global Village for Future Leaders of Research and Industry is an intensive five-week summer program that teaches entrepreneurial and leadership skills to participants while increasing their global business knowledge and cross-cultural understanding. Drawing participants from all over the world, the program creates a microcosm of the global community, combining panel discussions with executives and business consulting projects with culture nights and country presentations to facilitate the goals of the program. Alumni of the Global Village are then eligible to apply for a full-tuition scholarship to Lehigh’s MBA program and build on their broad international knowledge with more focused learning in business and management.

After attending the Global Village program, through which he worked with students from the United States, Germany, Canada, Portugal and Turkmenistan on a consulting project for a chemical company, Shnaydruk traveled to the Ukraine and founded a successful startup in spite of the economic downturn. He then returned to Lehigh to pursue his MBA and participated in Lehigh’s Small Business Development Center. He now works for NovaTech as an international engineering manager, and has already traveled to Guatemala in his first month of employment.

MBA Program Associate Dean Andrew Ward commented on the benefits of having Global Village alumni in the MBA classroom, saying that it benefits traditional MBA students as much as the scholarship student. This is an example of cooperation among offerings within the same university that can yield significant benefit to prospective MBA students who do sufficient research to take advantage of them.

Tech Firms, Start-ups and Nontraditional Careers: MIT Sloan’s MBA Class of 2013 Branches Out

Tech Firms, Start-ups and Nontraditional Careers: MIT Sloan’s MBA Class of 2013 Branches Out

Official employment reports for the MIT Sloan School of Management Class of 2013 have yet to be released, but Susan Kline, Director of Sloan’s Career Development Office, shed some light on what the most recent class of MBA graduates will be doing as they join the workforce. According to Kline’s data, approximately forty percent of the Sloan MBA class of 2013 will pursue non-traditional business ventures and specializations.

The less traditional specializations Sloan’s most recent graduates gravitate to include: entrepreneurship, sustainability, healthcare, entertainment, media and sports management, among others. To Kline, the shift in focus demonstrates foresight; innovative MBA graduates appear ready to adapt to a competitive economy by any means necessary. She predicts that record number of Sloan students will launch their own businesses, begin their careers in the tech industry, and specialize within entrepreneurial niches of traditional business areas like consulting, finance, and technology. Meanwhile, interest in pursuing traditional MBA careers like investment banking has stagnated.

Most importantly, she says this is a national trend not confined to MIT.

Kline’s analysis comes on the heels of remarks by Columbia Business School Dean Glenn Hubbard about the importance of integrated curricula to MBA study. On its face, MIT’s employment data might seem to undermine Hubbard’s suggestion that MBAs should avoid narrow, specialized courses of study. In fact, Kline’s perspective could vindicate Hubbard’s pedagogical insistence on the importance of a general management education. The takeaway is that economic pressures are pushing MBA graduates to become more creative, independent, adaptable and entrepreneurial, whether they work for an established firm or for themselves. That requires a generalist’s grasp of all the various functions of business and how they fit together, which is what the broad management foundation of an MBA can provide.

How to ask your employer to pay for your MBA

How to ask your employer to pay for your MBA

Sponsored Content – originally published on Illinois.edu

Students who earn their MBA or seek out other continuing education gain knowledge and skills that benefit their companies.

There are a lot of factors to consider when it comes to earning a degree while working and balancing other commitments, and one of the biggest is how to afford it. According to The State of Higher Education 2023 report from Gallup and the Lumina Foundation, Americans say cost is the single largest barrier to going back to earn a degree, despite knowing the benefits of advanced education.

One way to offset the cost of earning an MBA or other advanced credentialing is to ask your employer to help cover tuition costs. Here are some strategic ways to approach it:

Find out what money may already be available to you.

Some companies offer an annual stipend for continuing education, so that is a great place to start, according to Jeffrey Loewenstein, professor of business administration at Gies College of Business at the University of Illinois and an expert on workplace negotiation.

His research and teaching center on negotiation, creativity, and leadership in the workplace and how these components work together to build better spaces for employers and employees. This expertise lends itself to helping employees ask for what they need – including financial support for continuing education.

Some students in Loewenstein’s online MBA classes take those courses at a rate covered by their employer’s yearly contribution and cover the cost of additional courses on their own if they want to complete their program faster.

For the companies that do not offer educational support as a benefit, Loewenstein explains that it is imperative to explain that further education will make an employee more capable, accelerate their professional growth, and give them the ability to contribute more.

“When professionals can earn their MBA while working, the benefit to the employer goes up because they are seeing the immediate skills and growth of their employee’s education,” Loewenstein said.

He says that when an employee negotiates to have the cost of further education covered, they can highlight that both the employer and the employee win.

Do your research.

Asking your employer to pay for degree or credentialing programs will take time from their schedule, and yours. Make the time worth it for both sides by showing up prepared. Do your research so you can explain:

  • The duration of the college program
  • The potential time commitment needed from you
  • The overall cost and what you are asking your employer to cover
  • The learning outcomes you will achieve
  • How the degree will enhance your professional future with the company

When you have the details in hand, it makes it easier for your employer to say “yes.”

Describe your plan.

You need to be ready to explain how you plan to maintain your current job performance while you take classes.

Chi Chan, current online MBA student at Gies College of Business, said, “I work on not overcommitting myself to too many classes in each semester to make sure my work performance doesn’t suffer while I pursue my MBA.”

Online degree programs are ideal for working professionals. In fact, Prosperity for All estimates as many as 57 million people will take an online course by 2027. Online education has exploded in popularity for many reasons; it can be done at any time from any place, and at Gies, it’s just as effective as in-person instruction.

“The flexible class schedule in the online MBA program at the University of Illinois – and the option to listen back to the class recordings – make it an ideal program for busy working professionals like me,” said Naimul Kader, a current online MBA student at Gies.

Also, consider whether you’ll need to take time off to study or complete work and factor that into the plan you share with your employer.

Share the direct benefits to your company.

When a company offers support, including financial support, for continuing education, it increases employee loyalty and reduces turnover. A Workplace Learning Report found that 94% of employees would stay at a company if it invested in their career development.

“Employees are not usually earning a degree to move on to a different job. They often want to be more effective and capable and intend to stay loyal to their employer,” Loewenstein said. “And as the employee takes a class, they immediately become a more effective worker.”

Kader is one example of successfully approaching an employer about covering the cost of a degree.

“I was able to convey to my employer that paying for my continuing education is not an expense, but an investment,” Kader said. “And as a student, I’ll contribute to uphold the company’s value as a brand ambassador in every meeting and every person I meet on a day-to-day basis in my courses.”

Kader further explains, “Earning my MBA has given me new tools, techniques, concepts, and a network of other talented students from around the globe. It has given me a new perspective to bring to the table at work.”

“I feel my productivity, confidence, and integrity have developed even more than before as a result of participating in the MBA program. I have become more self-motivated, and I have the tendency to take more calculated risks for the company,” Kader added.

Tangible skills also accompany students who are in advanced degree or certification programs.

“Having a higher level of education, especially an MBA, allows me to understand the business impact of the decisions that I make daily. This allows me to make better decisions that will positively affect my company and ensure that I can contribute to the well-being of my company at a higher level,” Chan said.

The Gies Business Difference

The University of Illinois’ Gies College of Business recognizes that cost is a major barrier to graduate education, which is why the College intentionally priced its online MBA program (iMBA) at less than $25K – a fraction of what you’d expect to pay at many other premier universities. Some students can complete the whole program with the existing educational benefits offered by their employer; others, like Kader, have successfully demonstrated the benefits of their program and convinced their employer to offer additional support.

Loewenstein explained that the goal of the University of Illinois’ online MBA program is to create life-changing access to business education. Every course is offered multiple times online so learners can participate from anywhere in the world. He highlighted that the program is intentionally designed to be incredibly flexible so that it fits easily into many people’s lives.

Gies College of Business at the University of Illinois allows students the flexibility to pay tuition as they take classes – instead of paying for an entire semester or entire program up front. The MBA program can be spread out over three to five years, giving learners the opportunity to choose how many courses they take per year.

The Georgetown University Master of Science in Environment and Sustainability Management (MS-ESM) is a transformative program that merges scientific expertise with business acumen, empowering individuals to tackle pressing environmental challenges and contribute to a more sustainable future within diverse organizational settings.

Developed collaboratively by the Earth Commons Institute, the McDonough School of Business, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the MS-ESM program recognizes the pivotal roles of both scientific understanding and business principles in advancing sustainability goals worldwide.

In this article, we hear from two MS-ESM alumni who are now making waves in the realm of environment and sustainability. Through their narratives, we uncover the unique facets of the program, its interdisciplinary approach, and the impact it has had on shaping their careers as principled leaders in this critical field.

Read on to learn how Georgetown’s MS-ESM program equips aspiring environmental champions with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to effect positive change and create a more sustainable world.

Daniel Haghjou, Georgetown McDonough MS-ESM Class of 2023

Age: 25
Hometown: Germantown, Maryland
Undergraduate Institution and Major
: Texas State University- BS in Health Science/Biology
Graduate Business School, Graduation Year and Concentration: Georgetown MS-ESM, Class of 2023 (first cohort)

Pre-MS-ESM Work Experience: In undergrad, I worked in the medical field. From being a medical scribe in the ER during the COVID crisis to working as a surgery assistant for a urology surgeon. During MS-ESM I worked as an operations supervisor at DC Bouldering Project (a climbing gym)
Post- MS-ESM Work Experience:
I work as a sustainability planner for Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW)

Why did you choose to attend Georgetown University? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
It had always been a dream of mine to attend Georgetown University. I remember being a little kid and running around the campus, I was absolutely fascinated by the campus, and told myself that one day I would be a student. For grad school, it came down to accepting my Georgetown offer or Johns Hopkins offer. I decided to go with Georgetown not only to quell my childhood dreams, but also because I was interested in the cross-section of environmental science and business, as well as being able to be part of the first cohort.

Please elaborate on your current professional role. What about your MS-ESM experience prepared you for it?
Curriculum
I thoroughly enjoyed the cross-coordination of the curriculum. It was very evident that the professors had gotten together to fully integrate and plan out their lessons so that there would be beneficial overlap. As a science nerd, I enjoyed the environmental science classes the most, but I found myself particularly engaged in the business courses taught by professor Agrawal, as this was a whole new landscape to me that was incredibly mind-opening.

Activities
The career talks were most beneficial to me, with professionals in their given industries coming to discuss what they do and how they got there. The ability to be there in person with them, and pick their brain of useful real-life information was very influential to my growth in my professional life.

Career Services
Georgetown’s career services provided some good tools to shape up my resume.

MS-ESM Alumni
I am still friends with most of my fellow peers from the program, and each and every one of them is open to connecting and helping each other out in any way possible.

Why did you choose your current company? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to work?
I applied to quite a number of jobs across the nation. I had some offers that were financially appealing but were not in an ideal location. Some opportunities were in a place I could thrive with a great company but pay was less than ideal. It took time, but finding a good middle ground on ideal place, ideal pay, and ideal organization is what set WDFW apart. Additionally, I could tell in the interview process, that they were not solely looking to fill a role or check a box. They truly care about the environment and had very ambitious plans that excited me to join them.

Advice for prospective applicants: What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process to the MS-ESM program?
For applicants, be true to yourself. You might think that your experience or background won’t line up perfectly, but the program is not looking for a perfect fit. MS-ESM truly seeks a truly diverse applicant group with people from many different backgrounds and fields.

What do you think has been the ROI of the MS-ESM program, for you?
The connections I have made through the program have been most valuable to me personally. Not only with fellow cohort members and professors, but also guest speakers and professionals in my sector that have been made through my time at Georgetown University.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Study hard but don’t forget to have fun!

Andrea Marin Monterrubio, Georgetown McDonough MS-ESM Class of 2023

Age: 34
Hometown: Mexico City, Mexico
Undergraduate Institution and Major: Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) / BA in Law
Graduate Business School, Graduation Year and Concentration: Georgetown University McDonough School of Business, MS-ESM, Class of 2023
Pre-MS-ESM Work Experience:

  • General Director, Energyby5 Mexico, 3 years, Clean Energy
  • COO, Energyby5 Mexico, 2 years, Clean Energy
  • Director of Business Development, Blue Energy and Electricity, 1 year, Energy
  • Advisor, Mexican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, 1 year

Post- MS-ESM Work Experience: Director of Origination – Americas, Prologis, 0.5 years, Clean Energy

Why did you choose to attend Georgetown University? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
I decided to attend Georgetown’s MS-ESM program to advance my career and fill in knowledge gaps. As a lawyer, the program offered me the opportunity to develop both analytical and scientific skills, which are essential in addressing complex business and sustainability challenges.

Please elaborate on your current professional role. What about your MS-ESM experience prepared you for it?
Curriculum
The most relevant courses for me were finance and data analysis. The analytical skills that I gained in these courses are already allowing me to approach energy sector challenges with a more informed and strategic perspective.

Community
The most important parts of my growth during the MS-ESM program were the connections made and the casual talks that happened. Talking with professors who showed different opportunities, chatting with classmates from various backgrounds in the same industry, and joining networking events in lively Washington, DC, were significant experiences. These interactions gave me a wide view to position myself to handle the big challenge of our time: climate change.

Career Services
Career services gave me a plan to figure out my dream job and how to get it. They kept me on track from the beginning of the program, making sure I did things every month that eventually led to me getting hired by Prologis.

MS-ESM Alumni
MS-ESM alumni played a pivotal role in supporting my professional success by consistently keeping me motivated and fostering eagerness throughout my journey. Engaging with them provided valuable insights into their own career paths, successes, and challenges, serving as a source of inspiration.

Why did you choose your current company? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to work?
I chose my current company, Prologis, for a couple of key reasons. Firstly, I had prior experience working with them in my previous role, and they stood out as my favorite client. Secondly, the company culture played a significant role in my decision. Additionally, the opportunity to collaborate with intelligent and high-performing individuals adds to the appeal.

What do you think has been the ROI of the MS-ESM program, for you?
The ROI of the MS-ESM program for me has been unquestionably positive. I’ve landed my dream job, actively contributing to the carbon neutrality efforts of utility companies across the U.S. Each day, I collaborate with like-minded individuals, creating an environment where continuous learning is a constant.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
As a member of the inaugural MS-ESM graduating class, I hope the program continues to cultivate professionals who can effectively bridge the gap between science and business. By fostering knowledge exchange between these two fields, the program can empower future graduates to navigate the complex intersection of sustainability and business. This interdisciplinary approach will be crucial in tackling pressing global challenges such as climate change and driving meaningful change in both scientific and business contexts.

emlyon: From International MBA To Entrepreneurship: How I Launched My Own Company

emlyon: From International MBA To Entrepreneurship: How I Launched My Own Company

Sponsored Content
originally published on em-lyon.com and written by BusinessBecause

Whether you want to be your own boss, or you have a great idea for a startup, becoming an entrepreneur is a popular career path for business school grads.

Entrepreneurship is a popular post-business school career goal and a sought-after part of the MBA curriculum. In 2023, the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) Prospective Students Survey found that almost half of business school applicants felt entrepreneurship and innovation was a curricula essential.

For Haobo Jiang, his International MBA from emlyon business school not only fueled his passion for entrepreneurship but also served as the launching pad for his own successful business venture.

We caught up with Haobo to find out how his International MBA helped him get there.

Discovering MBA entrepreneurship

After 13 years working across various sectors including IT engineering, finance, and supply chain management at appliance company Groupe SEB, Haobo decided it was time for a change.

I had a general vision of the business world, but I lacked an understanding of core business elements”, he explains. “I realized it would be a good thing to have an MBA to complete that piece of the puzzle.

With emlyon, located across the street from his place of work, Haobo got the perfect opportunity to find that missing piece of his puzzle.

Despite having no prior plans to launch a startup, as soon as Haobo joined emlyon he quickly became interested in MBA entrepreneurship. The small class sizes gave him the ability to connect with his cohort and access personal support that developed his interest in the area.

Our team took the “entrepreneurship” course quite seriously, and we had a great teacher who inspired a lot of ideas. That was the start of everything.

Gaining experience in MBA entrepreneurship

The emlyon International MBA prioritizes innovative thinking and places a strong emphasis on entrepreneurship.

One of the MBA classes Haobo took, named Fundamentals of New Ventures, is a dynamic and involved course, which works with students to develop their ideas from the conception of a problem to pitching a fully-fledged idea.

A freelance professor, Benjamin-Samuel Ewenczyk, teaches this class and brings his own experience as a successful entrepreneurship. Ben founded 4 Hour Startup, which creates, teaches, and helps implement resources about lean startup methodology and lean prototyping.

He also launched a vintage clothes brand with a past student, so he had many business lessons to impart to budding emlyon MBA entrepreneurs. His class teaches students how to establish small, achievable ideas, then workshop the concepts and, finally, pitch a complete idea.

The class is a small accelerator. The idea is to teach the students about the fundamentals and push them to work on what’s important at that stage”, Ben says.

He adds that the key is for students to discover the most important part of a business idea.

At the end of the day, what you want is to do something that’s useful, and that’s solving a problem for your users.” Throughout Haobo’s time at emlyon, especially on his entrepreneurship course, collaboration with his fellow students helped him develop his entrepreneurial mindset and skills.

At first, we didn’t realize we were making mistakes. And then when we shared the results, not only with the teacher, but also with other groups, you realize that there are better ways of doing things”, he says.

Launching a business after an MBA

At the end of the semester, many of Ben’s students have strong ideas that morph into viable solutions.

Haobo’s initial business idea came about from thinking about ways to teach Chinese in French schools. He went through various versions and mistakes before the idea became a solid foundation for a startup.

“That project evolved and matured a lot. Its origin was a very different version.”

Haobo describes the thorough process he went through to find the right version of his idea.

I submitted the proposal to my colleagues, to explore how things are going in the French education system. Then step by step, we met people who are working in the field, such as educational officials, parents, and students“.

Somehow we got to a conclusion about how we can contribute to make things better”, he explains.

This conclusion formed the basis of his business, Rivière Yuan EdTech. Haobo realized that teachers had too many balls to juggle, including class preparation, dedicated time with students, and reporting to superiors and parents. He proposed an end-to-end process that invested in generative AI, helping students prepare more efficiently, more readily interact with the students during class, and transform preparation into exercises.

Finally, since everything is tracked with the platform we’ve created, we give teachers some really easy to use models for the basic reporting purpose.” Haobo still feels supported by the emlyon International MBA through the network he cultivated there and the support he received.

You get very experienced professionals—not only professors but entrepreneurs themselves—who spend some time with you, who can listen and help you succeed as an MBA entrepreneur, he concludes.

Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business Q&A with M.S. in Environment and Sustainability Management Program Director, Dr. Kerrie Carfagno

Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business Q&A with M.S. in Environment and Sustainability Management Program Director, Dr. Kerrie Carfagno

Dr. Kerrie Carfagno, the Program Director for the M.S. in Environment and Sustainability Management at Georgetown McDonough, recently sat down with MetroMBA to share insight into the M.S. Program.

MetroMBA: How does this program differentiate from other offerings at your school and other programs in the GME space?

Georgetown McDonough Environment Sustainability

Dr. Kerrie Carfagno, Program Director MS-ESM

Dr. Carfagno: The M.S. in Environment and Sustainability Management (MS-ESM) program is a STEM designated interdisciplinary degree offered through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Earth Commons Institute, and McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. This interdisciplinary approach provides a unique curriculum that combines the principles of environmental science with a foundation in business management. Our program operates on a cohort model, meaning students learn from each other and their professors as they complete the 11-month program in the same classes on campus. A unique attribute about our program is the cohort tends to skew more female with 80% of the current cohort identifying as such.

MetroMBA: What is the typical profile of a student who would benefit most from this program and what characteristics are your admissions team looking for?

Dr. Carfagno: We take a holistic approach when reviewing applications for admission to MS-ESM. We look for students who are eager to learn and make a positive impact, have a passion for sustainability and the environment, and a collaborative mindset that embodies the Georgetown spirit. Typical students who benefit most from this program tend to fall under three categories: recent graduates, career changers, and life-long learners. Recent graduates have a strong interest and academic background in either natural sciences or business. They are looking to develop their skills in the environment and sustainability management space further before entering the workforce. Students that fall into the career changers category are looking to switch from their current industry to sustainable management. And finally, life-long learners are those who currently work in a position related to sustainability and want to continue their education to be industry leaders in the field.

MetroMBA: What types of financial aid are available to students?

Dr. Carfagno: The MS-ESM program provides partial, merit-based scholarships to qualified candidates. While the scholarships do not fully fund the program, they do provide partial tuition coverage assistance. All students are automatically considered for the partial, merit-based scholarships at the time of their application submission.

Additionally, as a stem-designated masters program, there are plenty of outside funding opportunities students can pursue as well.

MetroMBA: How does your school assist in finding job opportunities and how does your program enhance a student’s profile as a job applicant?

Dr. Carfagno: The MS-ESM degree furthers one’s knowledge of sustainability and combines principles of environmental science with a foundation in business management, which can help prepare one for a variety of jobs within most industries. Throughout the program, students have the opportunity to work with a career management professional. Students work directly with the Assistant Director of MS-ESM Career Management to identify career paths, discuss career goals and receive career coaching to elevate networking and interviewing methods. Students have exclusive access to one-on-one career coaching appointments, workshops and career sessions tailored to support them in developing an effective job search strategy. They may also access many resources at the Graduate Career Center within the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, as well as attend select career events offered through the McDonough School of Business Career Center.

MetroMBA: What is one insider tip you can provide prospective applicants about applying to this program?

Dr. Carfagno:  An insider tip when applying to this program would be to make sure your passion for environment and sustainability shows through in your application. We are interested in knowing where your passion for the field stems from and how you will help bring about change to help solve the pressing environmental issues affecting our world today.

Lightning Round

What is one restaurant every student must visit and why?
The Tombs is a classic in the Georgetown neighborhood. It’s delicious and they have great deals throughout the week. Georgetown students love to spend time there after classes and on the weekends.

Where is the best cup of coffee on campus?
The best cup of coffee on campus can be found in our library at Midnight Mug. The Midnight Mug is a community space and coffeehouse where students can take a break from studying and hang out with friends and professors in a relaxed atmosphere.

What is the best ‘hidden secret’ on campus?
The best ‘hidden secret’ on campus would be the Heyden Observatory and gardens. The observatory is one of two Georgetown buildings included in the national register of historic places in the United States. It’s a beautiful space where you have fantastic views of DC and the overall campus.
