Lubin and IBM offer New Case Competition

Pace University’s Lubin School of Business has partnered with IBM to offer the first annual IBM Business Strategy and Insights Case Competition. The competition is open only to full time and part time students at Pace University. Students will work in teams of three to four people to develop a case presentation for IBM. In the past few years, companies have increasingly become interested in their representation in social networks, as business customers have increasingly used social networks to explore which vendors can best benefit their business. In the case, the students are asked to perform an analysis of online conversations to identify preferred social channels for IBM customers and see how IBM performs in those channels compared to its competitors.

The competition kicked off with a briefing and networking reception last week, where Lubin students heard IBM senior executives talk about the competition, job prospects at IBM, and skills that IBM looks for in applicants. The registration deadline for this year’s competition is October 23, and the competition takes place throughout the month of November.

The teams will prepare a five page written response with no more than two additional pages of graphs and charts, and a powerpoint presentation for their final judging. The first place team members will receive interviews for full-time positions or internships with IBM, while the second place winners will be considered for interviews.

According to Forbes’ 2012 rankings, IBM is the second largest company in the US (based on number of employees), and is one of the most profitable US companies. IBM designs a number of different products for storing, processing, communicating, and retrieving information, including computers, clocks, and global networks. IBM also aims to help companies adapt to technological changes.
