CEO of Cigna Corporation to Speak at Mays on September 18

David Cordani, the president and CEO of Cigna Corporation, will speak at Mays Business School at Texas A&M University on September 18. David Cordani received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Texas A&M University. The speech will take place in Wehner 113 from 12:40 to 1:30 pm.

“David Cordani’s relatively quick rise to be one of the leaders in the health care field is particularly remarkable,” said, James Benjamin, the head of the accounting department at Mays Business School, who remembers Cordani as a student. “I am confident he will continue to make important contributions to this very important field.”

In his speech, Cordani plans to share his perspective on improving health care. He believes that dialogue around improving health care should focus on creating a more sustainable health care system that seeks to involve patients in their own health management, instead of simply focusing on lowering costs of care. Cordani believes that improvements come from focusing on three foundational initiatives: embracing value-based payments and rewards, aligning incentives for everyone involved in the process of providing and receiving care, and pursuing executional excellence through information and oversight.

Cordani became the president and CEO of Cigna in 2009, after working for the company for more than 24 years. He has doubled the size of the company in five years, spearheading its tranformation into a leading global player in health services. He also is vocal on addressing key health challenges, like developing new health care delivery models, empowering patients to manage their own care, and partnering with physicians to improve clinical quality. As CEO of Cigna, Cordani leads more than 37,000 employees in over 30 countries to improve 88 million customer relationships.
