Student Research at Texas A&M-Commerce Takes First Place at Symposium

Students from Texas A&M University-Commerce recently took top prize at The Texas A&M University System 12th Annual Pathways Student Research Symposium. The symposium, which is available to all Texas A&M System students, awarded Commerce students with the first place prize in three of six total distinguished award categories.

Dr. Arlene Horne, Vice Provost for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies, spoke of the high quality of research presented by students each year. “I am very proud that our students presented their research projects in this large venue and performed with such excellence. For the third year in a row, A&M-Commerce students won the most awards of all A&M institutions participating in the symposium,” she said. “This speaks to the quality of education that our students are receiving at A&M-Commerce.”

The six distinguished awards were separated into categories for oral and poster presentations and academic level (undergraduate, master’s or doctoral). One A&M-Commerce undergraduate took top prize for his poster, while two graduate students were awarded for their poster and oral presentation at the master’s level. Three more students from A&M-Commerce were awarded for presentations in the doctoral level.

Winners on the graduate level were Katherine Skrabanek and Samuel Lawrence, who were awarded with first and third place for their presentation in the social sciences. Additional awards were given to students in the fields of agriculture, business and computer information, education, life science and physical science.

Dean of the Honors College, Dr. Raymond Green, expressed his excitement at the student’s success during the competition. “The research produced by these students is a testament to their ability and resolve and the university’s investment in student success,” he said. “Texas A&M University-Commerce attracts top notch students who, once they arrive on campus, are given the support and resources that they need to achieve, and often surpass, their academic dreams.”
