MBAs who decide to specialize in marketing have a wealth of options in a data-driven world. Analytics, social media and the ever evolving power of branding have permeated our daily experience, opening doors for graduates that didn’t exist even a decade ago.

For prospective Marketing MBAs, the New York metro area is clearly a top destination. The city holds endless possibilities as one of the world’s epicenters of commerce and culture, and an education there will yield a network that is beyond comparison.  Following is a look at some of the options if a marketing MBA in the New York region is on your radar.

Columbia Business School

The bustling campus of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business is, to quote its own description, “surrounded by the latest innovations from leading marketing practitioners as well as the cutting-edge research conducted by our world-renowned faculty… [it] is the home of Madison Avenue, Times Square, [and] the Fashion District.” With a strong focus on research in the curriculum, Columbia boasts a world renowned faculty as well.

To achieve an MBA in Columbia GSB’s Marketing Division, you can choose from a number of electives, such as Strategic Consumer Insights, New Product Development and Social Media and Entrepreneurship. The 42 required minimum elective credits are in addition to the 18 core coursework credits.

Gabelli School of Business – Fordham University

Students in Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business Marketing concentration are expected to complete the business core curriculum and prerequisites, comprised of such courses as The Fundamentals of Accounting, Business Ethics and Statistics. Students then take two foundational courses in research and analytics. The faculty at Gabelli have formulated specialized fields for the marketing MBA as follows: Strategic Brand Management, which includes study in consumer behavior, strategic branding, and strategy; Marketing Communications, comprised of such courses as Communicating Corporate Image and Responsibility and Sales Management; and Marketing Research and Information, which includes Qualitative Research and Modeling.

Gabelli Marketing MBAs then take a three-credit experiential course, which can take the form of an internship, consulting project or independent study.

Stern School of Business – New York University

New York University’s Stern School of Business’  says “will study in the business capital of the world with the marketing community’s most important leaders”.

Marketing MBA grads have gone onto some of the global economy’s giants in pharmaceuticals, retail, finance, entertainment and technology. And, as host of the Annual Graduate Marketing Association Conference, Stern is a renowned place to hone in on a network. Recent speakers have included Nicolas Utton, CMO of E*TRADE Financial; Carolyn Everson, Facebook’s Global Marketing VP and Steve Hindy, Chairman and Co-Founder of Brooklyn Brewery.

Stern offers both a general and a digital marketing specialization, each of which include a minimum of nine credits (three courses) in addition to the core requirements. Among the many courses offered within the specialty are financial services, pharmaceutical or sports marketing; strategic planning; and market research.

Lubin School of Business – Pace University

Pace University’s Lubin School of Business offers several options for the Marketing specialization—the fast track and the full time Marketing Management MBA and the MS in Social Media and Digital Marketing. Six prerequisites are required for the MS in Social Media and Digital Marketing in Business Writing, Marketing Management and Data Analysis. This is in addition to 12 required credits in such courses as Market Research and the Foundations of Social Media and Digital Marketing.

For the Marketing Management MBA, students can choose courses from a set of professional core courses (15 credit hours), six credit hours in the required specialization area and nine credit hours in specialization electives.

Zicklin School of Business – Baruch College

Finally, the Marketing MBA at Baruch College/CUNY’s Zicklin School of Business is comprised of 12 credits—six in the required areas of Market Research and Consumer Behavior and an additional two courses in International Marketing, Advertising and Internet Marketing. Zicklin requires marketing MBAs to take 33 core credits, or 12 classes, plus both a general and an international elective course.
