JHU Carey and Hopkins Engineering School Launch New Dual Degree Program

Carey Business Fellows

Johns Hopkins University is offering a new dual degree program that will allow students to earn a bachelor’s degree in engineering and an MBA degree, all within five-years. Sounds too good to be true, right? The dual degree program will be offered through the Whiting School of Engineering and Carey Business School beginning in the fall of 2016 and is constructed to allow students to complete their coursework for both degrees within five years. According to Hopkins, the five-year time-frame for the completion of two degrees offers a substantial savings of time and money for students over pursuing the degrees separately.

Here’s the breakdown: Students start with their bachelor’s degree courses at the Whiting School of Engineering for the first three years of the program. At the start of year four, students begin working toward a full-time Global MBA. Year four concludes with a summer internship, before year five will cover the remaining coursework for degrees at both schools.

Bernie Ferrari, dean of the Carey Business School, said in a release:

“The nexus between engineering design and business application has never been stronger in today’s economy. Breakthroughs and discoveries need to be economically viable to have a lasting impact on the world. This dual degree program will offer Whiting School Engineering students a unique opportunity to bridge gaps between the engineering and business fields.”

Ed Schlesinger, the Benjamin T. Rome Dean of the Whiting School of Engineering, added:

“Johns Hopkins engineering students are extremely entrepreneurial in the way they approach solving problems. They are eager to turn their innovations into products that can have an impact on people’s lives and the partnership with the Carey School will provide them with the business skills they need to do this.”

This isn’t the only dual business degree available at Hopkins. The Carey Business School also offers a dual MPH/MBA degree program with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, an MBA/MS in Applied Economics with the Johns Hopkins Krieger School of Arts & Sciences, and an MBA/MA in design leadership with Maryland Institute College of Art.
