Foster Professor Explores Seattle Civics, Culture and Commerce in New Podcast

The University of Washington’s Foster School of Business published an article on Associate Professor of Marketing Jeff Shulman’s 13-episode “Seattle Growth Podcast,” which features “in-depth conversations with 100 Seattleites” on how the city’s unprecedented growth is polarizing local opinion.

According to the article, Shulman spoke with residents, educators, health care professionals, civil servants and business owners, as well as arts and culture-makers about a diverse array of issues surrounding Seattle’s metamorphosis: “home buying, homelessness, renting, density, preserving the city’s character, emergency services, health care, public utilities, schools, transportation, city budget and visions for the future.”

The Seattle Growth Podcast’s inaugural episode, “Growth and Seattle’s Tech Scene,” explores the intersection between the city’s robust tech sector—which is home to Microsoft, Amazon, Expedia, Nintendo and others—and how its development influences local civics, culture and politics.

In the first episode, Shulman spoke with a diverse cast of local players about new challenges a booming Emerald City may create for business leaders:

  • Rob Johnson, Seattle City Council member (1:30)
  • Parker Ferguson, partner at Flinn Ferguson (2:40)
  • Chris Devore of Techstars, Founders Co-op and the Seattle Economic Development Commission (3:25)
  • Sunil Gowda, co-founder of Garmentory (25:40)
  • Vinayak Hegde, chief marketing officer at Groupon (36:15)

If you care about the health and well being of the Emerald City, do yourself a favor and subscribe to the Seattle Growth Podcast on iTunes or Stitcher. Look out for new episodes every Tuesday.
