JHU Carey Professors Nab $72 Million Grant
Thanks to the efforts of John Hopkins Carey Business School professor Toby Gordon, JHU will be receiving a $72 million grant over the next four years to support clinical research at its Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR). As we’ve often reported at MetroMBA, medical business is a trending field, which has brought a spike in MBA interest in the healthcare industry. John Hopkins’ world-renown strengths in medical research make it an excellent place for MBAs interested in the healthcare industry to collaborate with top-notch researchers. Gordon serves as the deputy director for business strategies at the ICTR, which receives further support from Carey Business Professor Jian Ni as a consultant. The ICTR will use the grant to create three new translational research communities. For those not versed in the lingo, “translational research” refers to the process of translating basic scientific research into practical applications–which is why it’s important to have the input of business experts. “Science and technology are progressing at an unprecedented pace, and the [Clinical and Translational Science Awards] program — which represents [the National Institutes of Health] NIH’s largest single investment in clinical research — is helping researchers harness these innovations and deliver improved diagnostics, treatments and cures for disease,” NIH Director Francis S. Collins recently stated in a JHU press release. John Hopkins’ medical facilities are among the best in the nation. Its medical program was ranked first in the nation for 21 consecutive years U.S. News & World Report. It’s no surprise then that the young Carey School of Business has already established significant strengths in the sector. In the summer of 2011, 25% of MBA students took internships in the healthcare industry, followed by 16% in tech firms.
