Team of Smith MBAs Captures Second Place at Competition

A team of full-time MBAs from the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business took second place in the 22nd Fisher Invitational Case Competition at The Ohio State University.

First-year MBAs Brendan Collins, Bini Dawit, Nadine Payne and Katie Tedrow represented the Smith school in a competition that featured a total of 11 top-notch MBA programs. Competing universities came from the Big Ten Conference as well as additional programs from the University of Rochester and Washington University in St. Louis. In the end, a team from the University of Illinois came in first place.

Teams had 24 hours to analyze a complex business case, identify the company’s challenge and present compelling recommendations to a panel of judges. Judges presiding over the competition were made up of industry executives that included leaders from the company being analyzed.

The competition was held from April 10 through 12, and OSU’s Fisher College of Business hosted the event in Columbus’ Nationwide Arena. Coincidentally, the Smith team tackled a case relating to the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets—the team who happens to play in the case competition’s venue.

Additionally, Tedrow took home the competition’s Best Q&A award for her performance and responses in the competition’s final round. For the preliminary round, Dawit was “Best Presenter” and Payne received the Best Q&A honor.
