Mason EMBA Continues Service After Military

Pilot Tony Haney, George Mason University School of Management EMBA ’13, served 22 years in the U.S. military. During his service Haney lifted his cargo plane off from foreign soil in medical rescue operations and other humanitarian relief efforts— memories that make for some of his finest and most memorable accomplishments as a military officer.

Upon ending his time in the military, Haney has gone on to serve others in different ways. He received his EMBA from George Mason in 2013 and the following year he became the owner of Senior Helpers. Senior Helpers is a home care franchise oriented to providing quality-of-life services to seniors.

“I can’t think of a better population to serve than our elderly,” says Haney. “My company enables seniors to continue to live at home. It also provides peace of mind to their loved ones who may have jobs or other family obligations that make it difficult for them to be there 24/7 for tasks such as routine medical appointments or trips to the grocery store.”

Haney continues to use many of the skills he learned in the classroom as well as in the military. He is also aware of the need to provide leadership for his employees and to create a company culture that is open to new ideas.

“I received a lot of training in the military, but I really needed to round out my education before entering the business world,” says Haney. “A year ago, when I was researching various business opportunities, the knowledge I gained from the master’s program helped me critically analyze potential senior health care businesses and choose one that would limit my exposure to risk while maximizing profitability.”
