Global MBA: Gaining World Experience

Every year, more businesses decide to expand their markets in to new countries. Business leaders and managers must be prepared to compete in the new foreign markets. To be prepared to become a successful global business leader, many people decide to pursue a Global or International MBA. This type of MBA program can help you to learn the skills that are needed to successfully move your company in to new markets and gain the knowledge of economies in different countries as well as government practices and business related laws.

Global and International MBA programs typically require students to complete a global residency during the program. This is a time when students will travel to a different country or region, typically one with new emerging markets, to study for a short period of time. Some programs also give students the opportunity to visit more than one country or region during the program. Students learn and experience the culture of the area they are residing in as well as the economy and government of the country they are in.

The Global MBA program at the Carey Business School at Johns Hopkins University  is a two-year full-time program. The program focuses on the impact and accountability of business to society. The program also requires students to complete an intensive 3-week international residency experience. During this residency, students complete an Innovation for Humanity project. For the project, students create business solutions for economically-challenged communities while working alongside local community leaders. Students help to find solutions for challenges these communities face in public health, infrastructure and social welfare. Students then formally present their recommended solutions to the community leaders.

While some programs, like the one at Carey send students to complete projects along side community leaders, other programs send students to complete courses at a partner university. The International MBA at the Graziadio School of Business at Pepperdine University offers students the option to choose which partnering university they would like to attend. Students also have the option to complete the courses in English or in the language of the country they will be residing in. In addition to the trimester abroad, students in the Graziadio International MBA are also required to complete a one-week study abroad session and an international or multinational business internship.

In addition to the Global and International MBA programs, there are also several Executive MBA programs that focus on international business. The George Washington University School of Business offers a Global Executive MBA in partnership with the Georgetown School of Foreign Affairs and the ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain. The program was created for senior level executives that have a current international role in their company. The program helps executives to manage and lead effective in the changing business environment around the world.

The program features six international residences over the course of 14 months. Each residency lasts for twelve days. The program runs from June to the following July. The six modules of the program begin in Washington, D.C. then move on to Barcelona and Madrid, Sao Paulo and Rio De Janeiro, Doha and Bangalore, Beijing and Shanghai and ends in New York and Washington, D.C. Program participants will also have to work in teams to complete a live consulting project for companies operating in the Indian/Chinese market or Indian/Chinese firms that are operating abroad. After completing the program, participants will receive two MBA degrees, one from George Washington University and the other from ESADE Business School.

A Global or International MBA program can be extremely beneficial for professionals who are looking to expand their firms reach in to new foreign markets. As the world becomes more connected by industry and as the development of new economic opportunities in countries that have previously not been seen as economically viable continue to grow, it is more important for executives and business managers to have a grasp on the global business world.
