Kogod Introduces New Snapchat Geofilter

If you’re a millennial (or at least know a millennial) you have probably heard of Snapchat. The app has revolutionized how users of the social media platform communicate with each other by encouraging storytelling through a series of short, time sensitive video clips.

In an effort to connect with digital native smartphone users on its campus, American University’s Kogod School of Business and the Kogod Marketing Association (KMA) have created an official Kogod Snapchat geofilter, which will allow students to use the filter to tag events, friends, presentations and classes from anywhere within the Kogod building.

Geofilters are special location-based overlays that allow users to show followers where a photo or video happened. Many popular geofilters are of public spaces and art installations. Kogod is implementing this geofilter to be used for both academic and social reasons. The business school is one of a few academic and residential buildings on campus to have its own geofilter. 

In order to create such an overlay, the school looked for help from 44Hundred– KMA’s marketing and advertising firm. According to the company’s LinkedIn profile, 44hundred is an on-campus marketing and advertising firm run exclusively by Kogod Marketing Association members. This student-run firm works with clients on everything from marketing and advertising strategy, public relations, social media, graphic design and website creation and maintenance.

“It’s certainly an awesome and creative way to tag events. You would see these filters at certain points around campus, but it’s nice to have a filter that’s professional and a little fun for Kogod,” said AJ Ledesma, a Kogod student.

Snapchat is a very popular app among smartphone users between the ages of 13-34. More than 60 percent of that demographic uses Snapchat to send more than five billion videos daily. There are currently more than 100 million Snapchat users worldwide.
