Alumni Profile: Brock Walker, George Mason MBA ‘14

A recent post on the George Mason School of Business website profiled MBA alum Brock Walker and his journey to a position at the Treasury Department. In the piece, which was written by Katherine Johnson, Walker describes Mason’s part-time MBA program as “one of the biggest challenges” he’s ever faced, but a worthy investment.

Walker entered the part-time program because he was currently employed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. He sometimes worked 12-13 hour days before heading to class for lectures, homework and projects. The hard work payed off, as Walker was named the Outstanding MBA Student of the Year after completing his degree.

Today, Walker serves as acting director of the Shared Services Program and has been with the Treasury for six years now. In his role, Walker leads a team responsible for overseeing a quarter billion dollar group of programs that offer services for the Treasury department as well as external federal agencies. In Johnson’s profile, Walker credits his Mason MBA degree with helping him advance his career.

Walker told Johnson,

“[Mason’s part-time MBA] helped me move up at the Treasury very, very quickly. Being able to show hard work and going above and beyond at work, but also taking the things from the program and translating that into work very quickly helped. I definitely feel like I wouldn’t be where I am in my career if I hadn’t gotten the MBA at Mason.”

Walker is still involved with the George Mason School of Business as an honorary member of the School of Business Board of Directors and an ambassador for the MBA program. As an ambassador, he communicates with prospective MBA students and speaks on preview night panels to offer his insight on the program. His message to prospective MBA students: “It’s worth the investment.”
