Texas A&M Foundation Recognizes Mays Philanthropists

Texas A&M Foundation

The Texas A&M Foundation Board of Trustees at the Texas A&M University – Mays Business School recently announced the recipients of the foundation’s highest honor, the Sterling C. Evans Medal.

Three couples: Kay ’02 and Jerry Cox ’72, Susanne and Melbern Glasscock ’59 and Alice and Erle Nye ’59 were recognized with the medal for the millions of dollars they have put towards the university—helping to fund scholarships, faculty support, academic innovation and much more throughout the years. Just as those it honors today, the award is named for Sterling C. Evans, an Aggie philanthropist who devoted himself to strengthen the university through philanthropy and motivate others to do the same.

Recipients Kay and Jerry Cox have devoted much of their time and generosity particularly to the Mays Business School. Jerry Cox, former president of Cox & Perkins Exploration, Inc., began his finance career at Mays, moving upward from financial analyst to president of his own company. His wife, Kay, pursued her degree much later in life—driven by a desire to be part of the Texas A&M family. “I had always wanted to be an ‘official’ member of the Aggie family, and now I have that ’02 after my name,” she said.  “As an added benefit, I received the best master of science degree in educational psychology there is.”

The Coxes’ philanthropic efforts at Mays have extended student opportunity and improved the quality of faculty. The Jerry and Kay Cox Hall at Mays honors their contribution, while another fund for the Business Honors Program could provide new opportunities to participating students. The Coxes’ also provided for an endowed faculty position in the business school, with the Jerry and Kay Cox Endowed Chair.

“We want to impact the business community,” Cox said. “Its not enough to just be successful in the business world. As Aggies, it’s not only our knowledge, but also our values and integrity that set us apart.”
