Smith School Hosts Executive Roundtable On Business School Global Initiatives

The Robert H. Smith School of Business recently had the privilege of hosting the first in-person meeting of the Executive Roundtable on business school global initiatives. The discussion featured a group of heads of international education offices at top-tiered business schools. For two days in June, they shared the best practices in global business education, examined assessment tools typically used to measure global competencies, and envisioned the “next generation” of global programs.

Universities of note whose leaders attended included: the Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, the Darden School of Business (University of Virginia), Columbia Business School, the Tuck School of Business (Dartmouth), the Kellogg School of Management (Northwestern), the George Washington University School of Business, and Smith (led by Rebecca Bellinger, Director of Global Initiatives).  The group’s membership also includes the Darla Moore School of Business (University of South Carolina).

The group informally came together at the 2013 annual meeting of the Global Business School Network (GBSN), a membership association that seeks to counter the world’s lack of management talent by building management education capacity through programs, networking, and events.  Smith serves on the board of GBSN.

This is one way that the Robert H. Smith School of Business infuses global opportunities and perspectives into the university to create a global mindset. Smith’s student population of 5,100 comes from 96 countries and 30 percent of our 200 faculty come from countries outside the U.S. The Office of Global Initiatives spearheads the internationalization of Smith’s students, faculty, staff, alumni, research, curricular, and co-curricular activities. The Smith School offers other global opportunities such as:

  • Exchange programs with 14 partners in Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East
  • Short-term study abroad courses in 12 countries
  • International consulting projects
  • International internships
  • Annual China Business Plan Competition at Peking University in Beijing
  • Leadership Executive MBA program in China
