Direct From The Dean: Carroll School’s Andy Boynton

We spoke with Dean Andy Boynton at Boston College’s Carroll School of Management. His interview is just one part of our Direct from the Dean interview series, which features deans from top MetroMBA schools.

Andy Boynton is the John and Linda Powers Family Dean of the Carroll School of Management and a graduate of Boston College in 1978 where he received a bachelor’s degree. He then received his MBA and Ph.D. at the Kenan-Flagler School of Business in Chapel Hill. Before joining Boston College, Dean Boynton served on the faculty of various prestigious universities around the world, including the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne Switzerland. Dean Boynton has also served as faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler School of Business, and the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia. BC Holds Inaugural Weekend Events for Shea Center for Entrepreneurship

The BC Carroll School of Management will be hosting the Shea Center for Entrepreneurship Inaugural Weekend on Nov. 5 to Nov. 7. During the weekend, the school will holds its dedication ceremony for the new Center on the Boston College campus. The Inaugural event will be held Nov. 5 from 4:30  to 7 p.m. at the Robsham Theater.

During the event, there will also be a panel discussion on innovation and entrepreneurship. The keynote speaker for the event will be Phil Schiller, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing at Apple Inc. Schiller will also serve as a panelist along with Bijan Sabet a General Partner of Spark Capital and Niraj Shah, Co-Chairman, CEO and Co-Founder of Wayfair. Jere Doyle, Executive Director of the Shea Center will serve as the moderator.

BC Launches Shea Center for Entrepreneurship

BC Launches Shea Center for Entrepreneurship

Boston College launched the Edmund H. Shea Jr. Center for Entrepreneurship on August 31. The center, named after the major donor and founder of California-based home building Shea Homes, will work to help integrate entrepreneurial thinking into the educational and formational experience of both undergraduate and graduate students throughout Boston College. BC will hold an official opening event for the center in November. The key note speaker for the opening event will be Philip Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing at Apple, Inc. and BC alumnus.

Jere Doyle, a seasoned entrepreneur, will serve as the center’s inaugural executive director. Doyle has built two start-up companies, Prospectiv and Global Marketing, before founding Doyle Enterprises, a firm that supports start-ups throughout the world. The center, which is part of the Carroll School of Management at BC, will also take an interdisciplinary focus, and allow students in each of the University’s eight schools and colleges to participate in its programs.

BC Alumnus Gift Endows Deanship of Carroll Dean

Boston College Trustee Associate John Powers ’73, and his wife, Linda have made a gift to the Carroll School of Management that will endow the deanship of Dean Andy Boynton. Dean Boynton has been dean of the Carroll School of the last ten years. The endowment, named the John and Linda Powers Deanship Fund will honor Dean Boynton’s tenure at the school. The Powers’ gift will also go toward Dean Boynton’s plans for the advancement of the Carroll School of Management.

Dean Boynton’s plans include efforts to devote greater resources to faculty research and teaching, as well as innovative programs that further enhance the student experience in the Carroll School. In addition to serving as Dean of the Carroll School, Dean Boynton also participates in numerous University projects at Boston College. He recently co-chaired a committee of deans, faculty and university administrators to renew and revitalize the undergraduate core curriculum. He also works with departments at Boston College outside of the Carroll School, leading workshops to help shape their visions and innovative strategies.

Carroll Dean Shares Advice in Forbes

Andy Boynton, dean of the Carroll School of Management at Boston College, recently published an article for Forbes on “trusting your gut” and how to make better decisions. The article discusses how the advice to “trust your gut” could be a brilliant decision, or could just as easily become a terrible mistake. Boynton explains that “being able to distinguish one from the other is a critical skill for a leader or anyone making a decision.”

So how does Boynton explain when and how you should trust your gut when making business decisions?  He gives three rules of thumb for trusting your gut. He first explains that it is helpful to trust your gut when you are in a situation such as working in an environment that is fast-changing and data is not always the best direction to follow. Balancing the data with your instincts, explains Boynton can be a step in the right direction.

BC Alumnus Gift Establishes Fellowship for Irish Students

Irish entrepreneur and philanthropist Denis O’Brien has donated a financial gift to establish an MBA fellowship for Irish students at the BC Carroll School of Management. Each year, the fellowship will fully fund the cost of the MBA program at BC for two Irish students. O’Brien is the chairman and principal shareholder of Digicel Group, one of the world’s fastest growing cellular companies as well as the owner and board member of Communicorp, Ireland’s largest media holding company.

An alumnus of BC’s MBA program, O’Brien created the Fellowship at Boston College to provide an opportunity for aspiring business leaders from Ireland to obtain a graduate education at a premier American university. O’Brien graduated from BC’s Carroll School of Management with an MBA in corporate finance in 1982.
