REGISTER: DePaul’s Cyber Breach Conference on Dec. 2

In today’s hyper connected world, a big question facing various businesses and institutions is not if they will get hacked, but when. With the list of companies that have been attacked growing daily, including the White House, JP Morgan Chase and the the National Institutes of Health, the needs and questions go beyond simple solutions like “don’t click on links in emails.”

Recognizing that a focus solely on prevention is not enough to deter all cyber breaches, DePaul University and the Kellstadt Graduate School of Business are hosting a conference that will educate people about that touchy, contemporary business issue. The one-day conference, called “After the Breach,” on Dec. 2 is co-hosted by the Arditti Center and DePaul’s College of Computing and Digital Media.

“We saw many conferences in this arena that described the threat,” Thomas Edwalds, executive director of the Arditti Center for Risk Management, which is co-sponsoring the event, said. “But they didn’t provide any actionable solutions. We wanted to provide both sides of the equation.”

The conference features big names from the banking, technology, government and corporate world including the Federal Bureau of Investigations to Fleishman Hillard public relations. The conference promises to showcase an expansive display of case studies that will help risk managers in a variety of fields find solutions to the next data breach problem. It also will feature a live hacking demonstrating by Andrew Hoog of via Forensics.  Hoog will start the conference with a demonstration of phone hacking and discuss the current state of mobile security through the use of statistics.

“For this conference we’ve taken the attitude that it’s going to happen, now what can you do about it if it does,” Edwalds said. “How do you properly manage the data breach without it crippling your entire operation?”

Edwalds hopes the conference makes an important statement about the center and DePaul’s role in the risk industry. He says the center plans to host more events along these lines, as well as develop a new DePaul graduate program that offers students skills they need to create practical, real-world solutions for 21st century problems in risk management.

“We want the center and DePaul to be known as the hub for all things risk management,” Edwalds said. “That includes cyber, legal, business, market, and systems risk. Our mission and goal is to help risk managers learn what they need to know to do a better job at managing risk for their institutions. This includes managing cyberrisk.”
