Paper by A&M-Commerce Faculty to be Published in Prestigious Intelligence Journal

Two professors from the Commerce College of Business at Texas A&M University have recently had their paper accepted by the Expert Systems and Applications journal.

Dr. Christian F. Hempelmann and Dr. Unal Sakoglu from Commerce worked alongside Varadraj P. Gurupur (University of Central Florida) and graduate student Raju Jampana to write the paper, entitled “An Entropy-Based Evaluation Method for Knowledge Bases of Medical Information Systems”. The paper focuses on the development and evaluation of knowledge bases for medical decision support. The Ontological Semantic Technology Lab, of which Hampelmann is director, has had an important involvement in the the research process for the paper. According to Gurupur, the faculty members’ work will help open the door to a new technique for ontological evaluation.

The publishing journal, Expert Systems with Applications, is an international journal dedicated to the exchange of information about intelligent systems and their application in industry, government or universities. Papers published by the journal typically deal with the creation and implementation of such systems. According to Google Scholar, the journal is labeled as the most prestigious publication on artificial intelligence.

In addition to expressing how the paper’s pending publication represents the quality of research conducted at A&M-Commerce, Hempelmann expounded on the involvement of graduate student Raju. With the paper’s acceptance, he says, they have witnessed the importance of student involvement in such research. “Like [Raju], these students will leave A&M-Commerce not just with a degree, but with hands-on training in research that is documented in publications with their names on them,” he said.
