Scheller Faculty Member Honored for Leadership in Accounting

Dr. Deborah Turner, accounting professor at Georgia Tech’s Scheller College of Business, has recently been honored as the 2016 Legacies, Leaders & Luminaries Honoree from the Georgia Affiliate of the American Woman’s Society of Certified Public Accountants (AWSCPA).

AWSCPA is a national organization which connects female CPA’s and those pursuing the designation through training, mentorship and focused relationships. The organization dates all the way back to 1933, when nine women CPAs came together against the many challenges affecting women at that time in the field. Since then, the AWSCPA and its Georgia Affiliate have been dedicated to supporting women in their career and personal development.

Dr. Deborah Turner will be honored this upcoming January during a special awards dinner at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center. Turner will be honored for her 30-year commitment to leadership, as well as the many important contributions she has made to the accounting professional. She is currently the John and Wendi Wells Professor for Teaching Excellence and Associate Professor of Accounting at Scheller, and has made several contributions to the field through articles and books, and in developing new courses and programs. “Dr. Turner is a role model. She is the one that inspired a few of our members to become CPAs,” said Gloria Lewis, President of AWSCPA Georgia. “Turner embodies all that the Georgia Affiliate of AWSCPA Legacies, Leaders & Luminaries Honor envisions.

Dr. Turner is often recognized for her teaching and commitment to up-and-coming CPAs. She has received the AWSCPA’s Educator of the Year Award and Literary Award, the Georgia Society of CPA’s Accounting Educator of the Year award, the Hesburgh Teaching Fellowship and from Georgia Tech, the Class of 1940 W. Roane Beard Outstanding Teacher award.
