A faculty member at Georgia Institute of Technology’s Scheller College of Business has recently been appointed to a senior accounting advisory council.

The Board of Trustees of the Financial Accounting Foundation (FAF) named  Dr. Jeffrey Hales— a faculty member since 2008 at the Scheller College of Business– to join the Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council (FASAC). The job of the council is to advise the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) on a number of issues, including matters of strategy, project priority, and any other issues that have an effect on accounting standards.

The FASB is responsible for financial accounting and reporting the standards of publicly traded companies in the United States.

The FASB selected Hales– who is an associate professor of accounting– to serve a one-year term on the advisory council, which began on January 1, 2016. After the term concludes, he will be eligible for three additional one-year terms. Hales was selected from a wide array of FASB’s stakeholders, ranging from academics to preparers. Any figure interested in the integrity of financial reporting was eligible for appointment.

Maryam Alavi, Scheller College dean, commented on Hales’ remarkable work and commitment to the field. “This prestigious appointment highlights Jeff’s innovative scholarship in the accounting field,” she said in a press release by the school. “Corporate leaders, scholars and students alike are beneficiaries of his exemplary research and teaching efforts.”

Hales currently holds the Catherine and Edwin A. Wahlen Jr. Professorship at Scheller. His research has appeared across a variety of publications, including the Journal of Accounting Research and Journal of Financial Economics. His research pursuits include decision making, behavioral finance and accounting standard setting.
