Top Employers in the Boston Metro

Whether you’re pursuing your MBA in Boston, or planning a relocation there during or after you earn your degree, the city’s job market bursts with opportunity.

Statistics published recently by Boston College’s Carroll School of Management show that the average total compensation for an MBA grad topped $100,000, with a majority of hiring taking place within the financial services industry. Here is a look at some of Boston’s hottest jobs in that field, along with several others.

Finance/Consulting

Bain & Company, headquartered in Boston, is an international leader in management consulting. The company has earned a stellar reputation for recruiting the best and brightest from the region’s schools, and they offer robust connections with many universities. The company offers several options for those wishing to pursue an internship. First year MBAs along with undergrads between their third and fourth years of school can apply. Bain has a rigorous screening process for hiring, but the payoff is well worth it.

Global consulting firm Charles River Associates, also headquartered in Boston, offers services to major law, accounting, pharmaceutical firms, in addition to government entities. The firm recently celebrated 50 years in business. As president and CEO Paul Maleh says simply, “We are looking for smart people who want to do special things.”  CRA offers opportunities for internships to undergrads and post graduates alike, and the company also provides strong support for analysts who wish to leave work to pursue advanced degrees. The company is currently in search of an employee relations specialist in addition to a benefits manager and an Oracle database administrator in the Boston area.

MassMutual is another top employer in the Boston area.  The firm is a top provider of life, disability, and long term care insurance, retirement plans, and financial planning services. With various options including an Early Career Rotational Program, a Mid-Career Internship program, and a Leadership Development program for those in the actuarial field, MassMutual is a worthy target to have on your list when job hunting during or after your MBA studies.

Pharma/Healthcare/Biotech

athenahealth, whose mission statement includes the goal to ‘unbreak healthcare’ offers a great array of opportunity for MBAs with a focus in healthcare. Its ‘athenistas’ work to provide cloud-based services for the industry, along with point-of-care mobile apps for consumers. Founded in 1997 as a small practice management business, the firm has grown into one of the leading employers in the Boston area. With career opportunities in user experience, sales, network and data management, athenahealth is a perfect organization for those who aspire to combine their business and technology skills within the healthcare profession.

The Tufts Health Plan, a non-profit insurer based in Watertown, offers a wealth of prospects for MBAs wishing to put their skills to work either with the main office of the company, or with the recently acquired Integra Partners, a durable medical equipment/orthotics benefit management company. Tufts Health Plan currently has a number of analyst positions available, and it is a great venue for those wishing to advance their healthcare management degrees.

The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a world renowned research and treatment center in Boston, and is also an educational partner of Harvard Medical School. For MBAs seeking a career in healthcare at one of the leading centers of its kind in the country, this is a great place to look. For those with an interest in development, there are numerous positions currently available. Accounting/finance majors as well as those with data analytics skills can also find opportunities here.

Claritas Rx, who touts itself as “a rapidly growing dynamic digital health data company”, is at the forefront of innovation in analytics and patient-level data integration. The firm, which sprung from Silicon Valley, has a rich startup culture that will appeal to MBAs seeking internships or full-time employment. Claritas is currently in search of a Solutions Manager in Boston. The company also has offices in New York and San Francisco.

Technology

Worldwide giant Amazon, which opened a Cambridge office in 2013, offers a wide variety of roles for MBAs searching for a career in tech. With recent positions including a life cycle recruiter, product manager, and technical account manager, the Cambridge branch of Amazon is rich with prospects.

Cengage, an educational content tech company, is headquartered in Boston and serves higher educational/k-12 programs, in addition to libraries and professional training organizations. If you’re an MBA with an interest in exercising your abilities in an environment that combines education and tech, this is a firm for you. With a rich culture of community involvement, Cengage is also a rich venue for those who wish to slant their professional growth in the direction of corporate responsibility. The company is currently looking to fill a position for a sales talent development director, in addition to a content vendor services manager.

Also headquartered in Boston, Wayfair, the online home décor retail company, began in 2002 as a makeshift venture run from one of the founder’s homes.
