Scheller College Professor Beril Toktay Honored for Work in Operations Management

Scheller College professor Beril Toktay

L. Beril Toktay, a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology – Scheller College of Business, was recently named as a Distinguished Fellow of the Manufacturing and Service Operations Management Society (MSOM).

Toktay is a professor of operations management and Brady Family Chair at Scheller, who has been responsible for mentoring doctoral, MBA and undergraduate students interested in the operations management field. She is also the founding director of the Ray C. Anderson Center for Sustainable Business, which aims to empower future business leaders with sustainable business practices.

The MSOM “promotes the enhancement and dissemination of industrial knowledge and efficiency in manufacturing and service enterprise operations,” uniting educators, consultants, students, researchers and others passionate about the field. The Distinguished Fellow award, an annual honor given for success in the field, was officially given to Toktay last month at the INFORMS MSOM Conference in North Carolina.

Toktay was given the award for her pioneering contributions in the field of supply chain management and sustainable operations. All the way back in 2000, her Management Science publication “Inventory Management of Remanufacturable Products” was one of the first supply chain management papers published in the journal. Since then, Toktay’s work has helped shape sustainable operations and supply chain into defined areas of scholarly study in operations management.

Only 38 other individuals have ever earned the title of MSOM Distinguished Fellow, including professors from schools such as the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University. “I’m humbled and honored to join the ranks of MSOM Distinguished Fellows, many of whom have been role models and sources of inspiration for me in my career,” Toktay said.
