Building A Career At The Emory Goizueta Business School

Even after you’ve stepped off the stage with diploma in hand, the hard work of an MBA continues. Despite the massive advantages an MBA can provide for those entering the job market, the process of searching for and applying to jobs—not to mention finding your dream job—can often be as much as hard work as earning the degree itself.

Thankfully, many business schools provide services that allow their students to prepare for entering the job market long before graduation day, providing a number of opportunities for students to meet business professionals and learn more about their desired career.

At the Goizueta Business School at Emory University, the work of the Career Management Centerr (CMC) begins before a student even arrives on campus to begin their MBA and continues on beyond graduation. To date, the CMC boasts a 100 percent rate of Two-Year MBA students with both a staff and peer career coach, hosting more than 160 career events each year. Below are just a few of the services offered by Goizueta before you arrive, during the degree and after graduation to ease the transition from student to business leader.

Before You Arrive

Students in the Two-Year MBA Program at Goizueta are able to begin the process of career development before even arriving on campus. Before school begins, the CMC staff survey students to discover their career goals. Students will also be asked to participate in a self-assessment process which can help to narrow down potential career paths and allow students to begin the process of exploring their post-MBA future

The initial survey will also allow CMC staff to pair students with a rising second-year peer career coach, or PCC, who are committed to providing incoming and first-year students with advice on resumes, cover letters and any other need of a student to get on track for their desired career path.

The Goizueta Two-Year MBA also ensures a curriculum with a strong focus on the core business fundamentals which will help better prepare students for the process of interviewing for highly-competitive positions.

During Your MBA

Between the two years of the MBA program, the CMC focuses on providing students with early access to career preparation resources. The Summer Experience at Goizueta remains an important time for academic work, and so career preparation is integrated into the curriculum during this time, ensuring that students can focus on their coursework while still able to take classes in professional development and prepare for the rigorous interview process. Yet despite this intense curriculum, students will still have a more flexible schedule during the summer, allowing for participation in workshops, alumni panels and networking events offered through the CMC.

Each year, the Career Management Center also sponsors a CMC Week, which allows students to connect with companies across the country in cities like Seattle, San Francisco, New York and more. During the week, Goizueta student-run clubs will host visits to major companies in a wide variety of industries, ranging from consulting to business technology to healthcare, allowing students with a number of different career interests to investigate their potential field.

Student internships are another way current students can not just explore a possible career path but also to gain valuable experience and an important competitive edge in the job market. At Goizueta, 100 percent of two-year MBA students have received internship offers over the past 10 years; and 100 percent have accepted. A quick look at the data for student internships is also telling. Roughly 63 percent of all internship acceptances began with a school scheduled interview, and 24 percent originated at a career conference.

After Graduation

Even after graduation, Goizueta alumni will have access to the university’s career resources through the CMC and Alumni Career Services office. Through these offices, graduates will have access to job postings available to the entire alumni population and remain in contact with the expansive Emory network.

Thanks to the extensive work of the CMC, 95 percent of two-year MBA students receive employment offers within three months of graduation. For the most part, such job offers originated with student internships often arranged through the CMC (roughly 54 percent), while 23 percent of job offers came as a result of school scheduled interviews.
