Davis Joins with Hastings for Joint JD/MBA

A pile of books at Suffolk

The UC Davis Graduate School of Management has joined with San Francisco-based University of California Hastings Colleges of the Law to offer a new joint JD/MBA program. Students at either school can complete both degrees in four years, rather than the traditional five years it would normally take to complete both of the degrees separately. The degree program will be offered starting in the 2015-2016 academic year.

The program is aimed for participants in either program whose career paths are on the intersection between law and business. Hastings professor Morris Ratner, said that the program is perfect for “students interested in starting or joining ventures in which they will be called upon both to give legal advice and to make business decisions.”

The JD degree program at UC Hastings is normally a three-year program and the MBA degree program at Davis is normally a two-year program. Students who complete the joined program will earn the two degrees concurrently and can complete the JD from Hastings in five semesters and the MBA from Davis in five quarters, reducing the time needed to complete both degrees separately by one year.

The program works with the two schools accepting some of each other’s credits for the degree requirements. Credits accepted for the degrees are subject to each institution’s separate policies with regards to the acceptance of credits taken at another educational institution. The respective Deans will determine which courses will be credited toward both degrees. In order to be eligible for the JD/MBA program, students must be accepted to each institution under its separate admissions procedures.
