SJU New President and First Lay Leader Inaugurated

Last weekend, Mark C. Reed, Ed.D., was inaugurated as St. Joseph’s University‘s 28th president. The ceremony, which took place on Sept. 18 at the Michael J. Hagan ’85 Arena, not only celebrated the inauguration of President Reed but also the history of the first lay leader at the university. During the ceremony, Archbishop of Philadelphia Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., D.D., Pennsylvania Congressman Bob Casey, Philadelphia’s mayor Michael Nutter and Philadelphia Councilman Curtis Jones Jr. spoke to the ceremony attendance.

Before becoming president of St. Joseph’s, President Reed spent 15 years at Fairfield University, where he held various positions including senior vice president for administration and chief of staff, vice president for administration and student affairs, dean of students and interim vice president for university advancement. Reed has also served as an adjunct faculty member at Fairfield in the Department of Mathematics.

The announcement of the University’s choice of Dr. Reed as president was made in April of 2015. “After conducting an open, nationwide search, Dr. Reed emerged as the top candidate among an impressive field of highly qualified applicants, said Robert J. Bowman ’81, vice chair of the Board of Trustees and chair of the presidential search committee in a university press release. “We are confident in his superb leadership skills coupled with extensive experience in higher education, and his lifelong passion for Jesuit values.”

In the university press release for Dr. Reeds announcement, President Reed told St. Joe’s that he is honored to have been chosen as the first lay president for the university. “As a Philadelphia native, I have known and cared about Saint Joseph’s all of my life, he said. “I look forward to working with the University’s outstanding faculty and staff to help fully realize its mission.”
