USD Celebrates Third Annual Research Week

Research Week

From April 18–21, the University of San Diego celebrated its third annual Research Week. It was a campus-wide celebration of research activity, honoring USD excellence. The event focused on USD students, faculty, staff and administrators and their research in classrooms, laboratories, centers and institutes, through published books and reports, experiences and within the community. It’s an event that demonstrates how research work is alive and well at the university.

Traci Merrill, director of the office sponsored programs said in a news release, “Academic excellence is at the core of USD and Research Week celebrates our engaged scholars. Students and faculty prepare all year to showcase their groundbreaking research and scholarly works, and this year’s celebration was a resounding success.”

The event was part of the 27th annual Creative Collaborations, which is a two-day showcase of faculty-student research projects. It also recognizes the University’s inaugural 21 faculty and administrators of OSP’s “Million Dollar Club” for external research funding efforts.

Creative Collaborations gave the USD community a chance to see more than 230 research posters representing 30 different disciplines. But it wasn’t the only place to view USD’s research. The School of Business held a graduate open house at the same time to host student-faculty dialogue. The Mulvaney Center for Community, Awareness and Social Action and the USD Changemaker Hub showcased its 2016-17 Impact Linda Vista Initiative projects. And Justice in Mexico presented its 2017 special report, “Drug Violence in Mexico: Data and Analysis Through 2016.”

Wayne T. Cottel, a graduating senior in chemistry who participated in the event said, “I think it’s a great opportunity for students. Presenting at Creative Collaborations really helps prepare you for national meetings and to prepare you for the real world of presenting your research. I’ve been able to do research, learn how to ask scientific questions and learn the tools to answer in a statistically significant way, in a socially significant way.”
