Chicago is a hot spot for entrepreneurs and startups. Not only is it the largest city in the Midwest, but it also offers a ton of great resources for those starting a business, including 1871 and Techstars.

1871 is Chicago’s center for technology and entrepreneurship. Today it is home to more than 400 early-stage startups. Techstars is an accelerator program that has helped over 750 companies with more than $2 billion in funding.

But it’s not just the city that offers resources to entrepreneurs—it’s also the universities. Chicago is home to a wealth of top-notch business schools, and for MBAs, there are a few programs that stand out.

Alumni Profile: Josefina Guillen, Lake Forest Graduate School of Management MBA

Josefina Guillen is currently a health care and operations project manager who has worked at such companies as Abbott, Pfizer, Hospira, Siemens, and Procter & Gamble. She received her MBA from Lake Forest Graduate School of Management (LFGSM) in 2015 with a focus in operations, lean management, and healthcare. Very well learned, Guillen also holds a Master’s degree in quality management and a BS in chemical engineering.

UIC Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies Head Helps Tackle Disaster Relief

Nancy Harvey, executive director of the Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies at UIC Liautaud, has been working alongside Janet Lin, an associate professor of emergency medicine, to devise a business plan for community-based training in disaster preparedness. The hope is to expand disaster risk reduction training in Haiti, a nation constantly bludgeoned by natural disasters. Continue reading…

Quinlan Professor Serves as Fulbright Specialist in Poland

Quinlan School of Business Professor Dow Scott recently served as a Fulbright specialist, consulting with Poland’s AGH University of Science and Technology on its human resources program. According to the school, the Fulbright specialist program “places distinguished U.S. faculty and professionals from various industries in short-term collaborative projects at eligible institutions in over 140 countries worldwide.”

Kim Holland is currently the Vice President of State Affairs for Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, a federation of 36 separate United States health insurance organizations and companies that provides health insurance to more than 106 million Americans. Holland represents Blue Cross Blue Shield Plan in the development of federal and state legislative, as well as regulatory positions and issues. Top Chicago Startups: Midwest Businesses Boom

Last year’s Chicago Startup Report, an annual breakdown of funding for various entrepreneurial ventures in the Chicago Metro by Built In Chicago, explained that the Windy City just had it’s best year yet for start up funding. According to the Report, Chicago startup companies brought in $1.7 billion in funding, much of which was acquired by emerging tech companies like Avant, kCura and ArgonCredit.
