Pepperdine Announces New Media and Entertainment Institute

Pepperdine’s Graziadio School of Business announced in a press release the launch of The Institute for Entertainment, Media and Culture.

The new media and entertainment institute will provide opportunities for students to learn emerging technologies in entertainment and media. It will cater to students in various majors “to become business savvy creatives, creatively minded executives and entrepreneurs, and entertainment industry-focused lawyers”, according to the Institute’s website.

Cross-disciplinary courses will include creative writing, sports and entertainment law, film studies, communications, media production, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Educators and administrators formed a committee in order to conduct a two-year study to define the Institute’s objectives. The committee’s members, including David Weil, executive VP and general legal counsel for the Starz network, and Dan Lin, producer of 2014’s the Lego Movie, collaborated to define how best to create a program which would push the Graziadio School into a leading role in producing high-level industry talent.

John Mooney, associate professor of information systems and technology management at Graziadio, said in the release, “The institute will nurture the development of new learning modules that will be practice-based, immersive, and interdisciplinary to give graduates the knowledge, experience, and confidence they need to be impactful contributors, leaders, or creative entrepreneurs.”

The Institute for Media, Entertainment and Culture will combine opportunities for academic research, content creation, seminars by industry professionals, and networking events to engage the future leaders in entertainment and the media.
