Hankamer School of Business Hosts and Takes Prize in Healthcare Management Case Competition

Baylor University’s Hankamer School of Business recently hosted the Robbins Case Competition in Healthcare Management, inviting graduate students from universities across the nation to compete. The event was hosted by Hankamer’s Robbins Institute for Health Policy and Leadership.

The case competition allowed students across the country to forge new ideas in the field of healthcare management with an emphasis on finance. According to administrative director of the Robbins Institute, Scott Garner, this financial component of the healthcare industry is becoming increasingly more critical.

The team from Baylor University earned third place and was awarded with $4,000. Trinity University, earning $12,000 in first place, and the University of California- Los Angeles, earning second place and $8,000, joined Baylor in the top three.

Other awards included a $500 cash prize for best presenter, as well as student performance in the preliminary question-and-answer rounds. Students who took home these prizes were from universities throughout the nation, such as Willis Masdon from the University of Alabama- Birmingham, Patrick Adams from Xavier University, and Justin Brewer from Trinity University for presentation. Students from Saint Louis University, UCLA and the University of Colorado-Denver took home prizes for question response in the three preliminary rounds.

Tom Haines, associate administrative director of the Robbins Institute, spoke of the opportunities provided by such a competition. “The competition allows the students to meet and network across universities and with healthcare industry professionals who serve as judges, case developers and competition sponsors,” he said. “It enables academic-industry partnerships to be formed and creates a valuable transfer of knowledge from healthcare professionals to students and faculty.”
