Henley Business School Publishes Report on Responsible Management Practices

Henley Business School

The Henley Business School at the University of Reading recently published a report which addressed its progress toward reaching the goals of the United Nations’ Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME).

The PRME are a set of guidelines established by a committee of university deans, presidents, and other representatives from the business education arena.

Established in 2007, the PRME encompasses six principles: purposes, value, method, research, partnership and dialogue. Henley reported its success in four areas: developing future leaders; responsibility and sustainability orientation; ethics/corporate responsibility in the research curriculum; and energy efficiency.

According to the report, Henley “has enabled provision of a learning environment that facilitates ethically aware graduates who are prepared for sustainable business governance and the responsible role of business in the national, regional and global economy in the years to come.” One of the initiatives that has developed from Henley’s adoption of the PRME is the Henley Interdisciplinary Sustainability Seminar, which will focus on disseminating research on ethics and sustainability to both the university community and the world at large.

The school has introduced course modules that focus on corporate responsibility and ethical business practices, with awareness of environmental sustainability as a high priority. The campus itself demonstrates the University’s commitment to such principles. The business school building at the college’s Whiteknights campus holds the highest certification of energy efficiency possible, and Henley is recognized as one of the country’s greenest campuses.

In a letter that introduces the report, dean of the college, Professor John Board said, “…The PRME principles and its philosophy and aims are recognized as important and relevant to current challenges that business and management must face”.
