Albert W. Niemi Steps Down as Dean of Cox Business

Leadership

Change is in store for the Southern Methodist University – Cox School of Business, where Dean Albert W. Niemi has just announced plans to step down from the administrative role.

Dean Niemi will step down from his position at the end of this academic year, but plans to stay on in his role as the William J. O’Neil Chair in Global Markets and Freedom. The search for Niemi’s replacement will begin immediately, during which he will continue to serve as dean.

Niemi first arrived at the Cox School of Business almost 20 years ago in June of 1997, making him the longest-serving dean in Cox history. Niemi has contributed to the school’s immense success during his tenure, earning recognition for the BBA, Full-Time, Professional and Executive MBA programs from a number of reputable sources, such as The Economists and Forbes.

“…[N]ow is a time to look ahead,” said Niemi. “We need someone with a vision to lead the Cox School to success in its next era. By stepping down as dean, but remaining to teach, I have the opportunity to support the next dean if he or she wants my advice, and I can be with my students, work with my faculty and staff colleagues and continue to be part of this great campus.”

Niemi has contributed more than just his leadership to the school. Through his skilled fundraising efforts, Niemi has increased the school’s endowment from $78 million to over $200 million. With the increased endowment, the university has been able to add 10 new endowed faculty positions, 60 new endowed scholarships, and eight new endowed centers and institutes.

According to SMU Provost Steven Currall: “As an academician, administrator, and university citizen, Al Niemi is second to none.”
