USC Marshall MBA Goes Long in Pursuit of His Degree

A USC Marshall School of Business MBA student knows a thing or two about how to lead a team, and it’s not solely the result of his business background.

Max Browne was the Gatorade National Football Player of the Year, along with the top-rated quarterback recruit to the USC Trojans in 2013.

Browne was so eager to go to USC that he finished his senior year of high school a year early, going on to earn his bachelor’s degree in communication from USC’s Annenberg School of Communications and Journalism. He enrolled in Marshall for the spring 2016 semester.

Despite his high standing as a quarterback, he had to wait for his first season due to the presence of star player Cody Kessler. But he will make his debut as a Trojan on Labor Day weekend 2016.

In a recent interview, he fielded questions about balancing academics and sports, along with how he plans to leverage his MBA studies.

He seems to have a knack for one of the key elements of any high-level position – effective time management.

“I was raised with a hardworking mentality,” he said. “It’s really about being productive with your time. If I’m not doing something productive, I almost get antsy. I’ve tried to maximize that and be a trailblazer for others on the academic side of the student-athlete.”

Browne brings his thirst for competition to bear in his studies, as he described while talking about a recent class in Organizational Behavior in Negotiations. “Maybe it’s the athlete in me, but the competition element was also very enjoyable… I love the game that’s at play with negotiations as far as what information you’re going to reveal and what you keep to yourself. I found the case studies and mock negotiations with my classmates really fun and educational.”
