USC Marshall Prof Honored for Entrepreneurship Education

Entrepreneurship Education

A USC Marshall School of Business professor of clinical entrepreneurship received top honors at a recent ceremony held by the U.S. Association for Small Businesses and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) in Philadelphia.

Jill Kickul, head of Marshall’s Brittingham Social Enterprise Lab and professor of Clinical Entrepreneurship, received the honor during the association’s annual awards program.

Kickul authored Understanding Social Entrepreneurship: The Relentless Pursuit of Mission in an Ever Changing World, a required text in business programs across the country.

Inspired by the school’s dedication to social impact, Kickul left NYU’s Stern School of Business in 2016 to join the faculty. “Having taught entrepreneurship for the last 20 years, I’ve seen how the field has really moved forward in accepting all sorts of ventures, including social entrepreneurship.  It has been profoundly gratifying for me. It validates that our research has moved the needle.” Kickul said upon receiving the award.

This is the second time a Marshall professor has been honored by the USASBE in the past few years; Professor Emerita Kathleen Allen was named Entrepreneurship Educator of the Year in 2014.

Helen Yli-Renko, professor of clinical entrepreneurship and Head of the Lloyd Greif Center, said, “Jill is recognized as a global leader [who] has shaped, and continues to shape, the development of social entrepreneurship as a research field… [She] has built ground-breaking pedagogy and programs to educate the next generation of social entrepreneurs.”

Kickul is the founding director of Marshall’s Annual Conference on Social Entrepreneurship, held for the first time at USC Marshall in 2016.
