LMU Students Receive Scholarship to Study in Korea

The Center for Asian Business at Loyola Marymount University has awarded four students with scholarships to complete a Cultural Immersion Experience in South Korea. The four students were selected to travel to South Korea from June 21 to July 5. The scholarships are named in honor of Fr. John P. Daly, the former director of the Center for Asian Business.

Daly worked in Korea from 1961 to 1981. He worked to help develop Sogang University in Seoul, where he served as president for 12 years. His lifelong goal was to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of culture and history between Asians and Americans. So far, 30 LMU students have received the scholarship since its beginning in 2006. The scholarships provide students with the opportunity for students to learn about Korean history and experience the culture.

The scholarships were awarded to students based off of their responses to essays, GPA and an interview. Students will spend two weeks in Korea and are required to submit a report on cultural differences experienced while on their trip when they return. The scholarships will cover part of the roundtrip airfare and all of the in-country travel arrangements. Students will stay with host families who will provide food and accommodations.

During their trip, a coordinator from Sogang University will supervise the students. Sogang University is the first Catholic University in Korea. It was opened in 1960. The school currently enrolls more than 13,000 students. The school features six colleges; humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, economics and business administration.
