USC Marshall Data Analytics Students Aim to Build a Smarter City

The first annual “Building a Smarter Los Angeles” event invited executives, city government leaders, scholars and students to collaborate on responsible ways that digital information can be used in the growth of one of the nation’s most populous cities.

Whenever we do an alumni spotlight here at MetroMBA, we make sure to pick a prominent alumni to profile. In this instance the alumni is so prominent, that the graduate school he attended ultimately ended up re-naming their school after him. Sure, Michael Quinlan donated $40 million to Loyola University which undoubtedly played a part, but Quinlan’s impact on the school and each company he worked for revolves around more than just dollars and cents.

On April 26, the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business welcomed Arne Sorenson, CEO of Marriott Hotels, to speak as part of the school’s CEO@Smith speaker series. Sorenson heads a company that is poised to become the world’s largest hotel company following the acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts — a move that now gives Mariott more access to middle-class demographics.
