Columbia Business School Professor Amit Khandelwal Receives Eccles Research Award

Professor Amit Khandelwal, the Gary Winnick and Martin Granoff Associate Professor of Business in the Finance and Economics Division, has been awarded the 2014 George S. Eccles Research Award by the  Columbia School of Business.

The George S. Eccles Research Award is given to a junior faculty member, chosen through a rigorous and competitive selection process, whose research is outstanding in quality and insight and emphasizes the bridging of theory to practice, the core of the Columbia Business School education. Past recipients of the award include Oded Netzer and Paul Tetlock for their important research in marketing, finance, and economics. The award is part of the George S. Eccles Prize for Excellence in Economic Writing, which was established at the School in 1986 by Spencer Eccles. The prize honors his uncle, George Eccles, a 1922 graduate of Columbia Business School. This year’s recipients are Jagdish Bhagwati and Arvind Panagariya for their book, Why Growth Matters: How Economic Growth in India Reduced Poverty and the Lessons for Other Developing Countries (PublicAffairs, 2013).

Khandelwal, whose research centers on international business and the effects of trade barriers, plans to use the Eccles Award honorarium for a work in progress entitled “Barriers to Technology Adoption.” Using a research design he and a collaborator invented, they are studying incentives to adopt the new technology and measure the diffusion of technology. Professor Khandelwal will be honored at a reception with members of the Eccles family and the Columbia community on May 12.
