Pulitzer Winner Shulmait Ran to Speak at University of Chicago Convocation

The University of Chicago is set to hold its 523rd convocation on Saturday, June 13, 2015. Instead of a commencement or graduation, University of Chicago calls this ceremony convocation, which means ritual assembly. More than 17,000 candidates and guests will share in this occasion, including speaker Shulmait Ran.

Ran is the Andrew MacLeish Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Music and Artistic Director of Contempo, and winner of the 1991 Pulitzer Prize in composition. Her works include symphonic music, operas, and chamber and solo works. She served as Composer-in-Residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

As far as specifics for the Booth School of Business, the Conferring of degrees of the 523rd Convocation will be Saturday, June 13, at 9:15 a.m., in the Main Quadrangle. Lunch will be served at noon in the Charles M. Harper Center, Chicago Booth. The diploma and hooding Ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 13, at 4:15 p.m., Arie Crown Theater/ McCormick Place, 2301 South Lake Shore Drive, Chicago

The University of Chicago’s first convocation was celebrated in January 1893. Since then, the University has held at least four convocations every year. Most convocations mark the end of an academic quarter; others are held to inaugurate University presidents or to commemorate significant institutional milestones.
