Western University Canada and Ivey Welcome TEDx this November

TEDx is coming to Western University Canada and the Ivey Business School this November 7th, 2015. The TEDxWesternU event will speak about meaningful change, creative solutions, and valuable learning. The goal of TEDx is to inspire a passion for spreading ideas in local communities from within.

Ten scheduled speakers have been added to the list so far. Those speakers include:

  • Michele Mosca, co-founder of the Institute for Quantum Computing
  • Kim Katrin Mi Milan, writer, artist, and educator
  • Roman Pringle, digital journalist, television host, and professor

The event itself will hold 100 students within McKeller Theater while many more individuals will be able to attend around the world via live stream. Students, faculty, and staff of Western University will also be able to attend a satellite location at the University Community Centre (UCC) Council Chamber, Room 315. The TEDx event will start at 9:00 am local time and end at 4:10 pm, and will include three fifteen-minute breaks and an hour for lunch.

Timothy Varghese, the director of internal affairs for TEDxWesternU 2015, stated in a recent interview with The Gazette, “The people I work with really understand the gravity and the impact that TEDx could have on a community. This is such an interdisciplinary idea. It’s something that regardless of who you are and where you stand in terms of Western—as alumni, as a professor, as a staff, as a student—I feel like it’s an event for everyone.”

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers are combined to spark deep discussion and connection within a small group setting. TEDx events are self-organized and locally run while still following general guidelines from TED.

TEDx last visited Western University in 2013. And sponsors of the current event include Ivey HBA Association, University Students’ Council, Science Students’ Council, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, and Social Science Students’ Council.
