Schulich School of Business Opens New Building Spring 2018

In the spring of 2018, the Schulich School of Business at York University will expand its learning space with a state-of-the-art building on the northeast side of the current property. This building is the centerpiece of the Leading Change Campaign, which is a comprehensive fundraising and alumni engagement campaign set to take place over the next five years to expand Schulich’s reach.

The new Graduate Study and Research Building is a 67,000-square-foot structure designed by the award-winning architectural firm, Baird Sampson Neuert. When completed, it will be one of the most environmentally sustainable and socially responsible academic buildings in North America. “This will be a landmark building in terms of sustainability and education,” said James McKellar, Director of the Brookfield Centre in Real Estate and Infrastructure.

Features include a 27-meter-high solar chimney, which will maximize natural ventilation and use of renewable energy. There will also be a green roof featuring a variety of vegetation, a media production center, ten research labs, a central courtyard, a graduate student lounge, a fitness and wellness center, rainwater recapture systems and more. There are even plans for a covered bicycle storage area to support sustainable commuting to campus.

However, what really stands out about the building are the centers of learning that it will house. A number of Centres of Excellence in management education will call the building home. These include the Schulich Centre of Excellence in Responsible Business, the Centre for Global Enterprise and the Brookfield Centre in Real Estate and Infrastructure. The building will also house 35 faculty officers, two 60-seat classrooms, ten breakout rooms, four seminar rooms and one 112-seat multi-purpose classroom.

“More importantly it will establish us as leaders in management education. It is a concrete statement of what we believe in,” said McKellar
