Ryerson University Is Leading the Way Helping Syrian Refugees

Many Canadian universities are ramping up efforts to help Syrian refugees find a haven. In a recent article, according to Paul Davidson the president of Universities Canada, “Universities feel a sense of solidarity with those who are under siege and the tens of thousands who are in camps and will be left there to rot without options unless people extend a hand.” The recent help offered by the Canadian universities is just the latest in a long history of universities offering help to refugees.

Ryerson University is leading the way in sponsoring Syrian refugees. In July, Ryerson University in Toronto partnered with Lifeline Syria to help resettle 1,000 Syrian refugees throughout Toronto. Ratna Omidvar, the executive director of Global Diversity Exchange at the Ted Rogers School of Management, is also the chair of Lifeline Syria.

Initially, Ryerson set out to sponsor 10 families, but in just over a month the school quickly recruited sponsors for 11 families. Sponsors include Valerie Pringle, an alumni and journalist, as well as Wendy Cukier, vice-president of research and innovation at Ryerson. Steven Murphy, the dean of the Ted Rogers School of Management, was another one of the financial sponsors who jumped in to help.

In 2013, Steven Murphy became dean of the Ted Rogers School of Management. He’s an award-winning professor, nationally recognized expert in organizational behavior, and a tenured professor in the Department of Entrepreneurship and Strategy. Throughout his career, over 100 papers, book chapters, and technical reports have been published under his name. According to his profile on the Ted Rogers School of Management website, his vision for the school is to build its reputation, enhance learning opportunity and renew curricula.

The Ted Rogers School of Management is one of the top business schools in Canada. Since 2011, when the Ted Rogers School received its AACSB accreditation, their MBA program enrollment has more than doubled.
