DeGroote Announces New EMBA Scholarships for Incoming Students

Money

The DeGroote School of Business recently announced four entrance EMBA scholarships in Digital Transformation program, valued at $10,000 each. All four scholarship recipients will be chosen by the EMBA Admissions Committee and McMaster’s School of Graduate Studies.

Professor Milena Head, Information Systems, and Academic Director of the EMBA program, told the school website:

“The scholarships are designed to attract and encourage diversity in the EMBA program. As an entrepreneur, for example, you can’t ask your employer for financial support, because you’re your own boss. The revenues you are generating, especially in the beginning stages, are reinvested in your company.”

The four scholarship categories are:

  • The Entrepreneurial Leadership scholarship: Awarded to one student in the program who has successfully launched and operated their own business. Preference will be given to applicants in the technology sector.
  • The Leaders in Healthcare scholarship: Offered to one student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and managerial competency in the healthcare industry
  • The Non-Profit Organizations scholarship: Reserved for one student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the non-profit sector.
  • The Women in Leadership scholarship: Awarded to one female student who has demonstrated exceptional professional and community leadership. The Women in Leadership scholarship reflects an emphasis at DeGroote on the advancement of women in business and society, recently highlighted by the launch of the DeGroote Women’s Professional Network.

Regarding recent findings from the American Association of University Women that only 26 percent of American computing jobs were held by women in 2013, Head commented:

“It astounds me that, in 2016, there’s still such a large gender gap when it comes to technology-oriented positions. Having strong role models of women in leadership positions in tech sectors can help to break some of the stereotypes that have been around for far too long. We definitely want to see more gender diversity within the sector.”

DeGroote’s EMBA program began in October 2015, making it the first EMBA in the world in which students focus on learning how to manage digital systems and how to use those systems to make data-driven decisions, lead complex and diverse teams in digital environments, and recruit exciting new talent.

The program is comprised of four residential modules in Ontario and California. DeGroote students are instructed by members of the school faculty as well as corporate partners CIBC, IBM, theScore and SAS.
