Rotman Students Perform Well in Renowned Case Competition

Fall 2016 was a successful semester at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. A team of four students in the Master of Financial Risk Management program won an international case competition while two Rotman full-time MBA teams made the finals in two other case competitions.

The Master of Financial Risk Management students beat out 74 other teams from 16 universities to take home the prize. To win, the team had to analyze and evaluate risk management scenarios over a multitude of rounds. In the end, the final round took place on November 16 and the winner of the TD Securities and Risk Management Case Competition was chosen by a panel of executive members.

The winners—Rotman students Kaspar Yang, Phoebe Cheung, Bryan Ding and Sean Wang—received a one-day job shadowing experience with analysts at TD Capital Markets Risk Management & Market Risk Control groups. In addition, they’ll have the opportunity to interview for the Summer Associate Program in 2017.

As for the full-time MBA case competitions, two different events were held in November. The first event was the 2016 Global Prize Strategy Case Competition hosted by AT Kearney. The Rotman team reached the international final held on November 18th but placed second to a team from HEC Paris.

The second Rotman full-time MBA case competition was the seventh edition of the Rotterdam School of Management Private Equity Competition. The competition invited teams from around the world to analyze real cases dealing with a European distressed company. The competition took place in Amsterdam at the end of November and included such prestigious schools as the London Business School, IMD, ESADE and TIAS School for Business and Society. In the end, the Rotman team made it to the finals but didn’t take home the top prize.
