Vancouver Island University MBA Program Structure

The Vancouver Island University Faculty of Graduate Management MBA is a 54-credit, 14-16 month program, accredited by Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) on the university’s Nanaimo campus. The program features 12 core courses, one elective, and two specialization courses, or, an applied business project with a four month internship. There are two start date options, beginning in either July or September. Students that choose option one, which begins in July, complete foundation courses in the first two months, then core courses from September to June. This leg of the MBA concludes with the applied business project and four-month internship from July to October. Those that choose any specialization complete the program in December.

Option two follows the same regiment, but begins in September and concludes in February, roughly 14 months after it begins. Those who choose a specialization in the second option will conclude the program in April, 16 months after the program begins.

A dual degree option with the University of Hertfordshire to earn an additional Master of Science in International Management is also available.

Curriculum

The foundations curriculum consists of four different courses taking place over eight to 10 weeks, worth a total of eight credits: Managing and Strategy; Foundations of Marketing; Foundations of Economics; and Basics of Accounting and Quantitative Methods. After the conclusion of the foundation courses, students in the VIU MBA complete six courses worth 16 credits in semester one. Semester two also features six courses worth 16 credits. Both semester one and two take 15 weeks to complete.

The shortened semester three marks the begin of elective coursework. Over seven weeks, students complete two more core courses and the first elective of the program. Semester four marks the beginning of the seven-credit, four-month internship portion of the program, in addition to the six-credit applied business project. The length of the program depends on whether students undertake a specialization.
